Late sowing of DFBs

Ok got my �2.14 DFBs from b&q (verve) so now i just have to confirm that i can reuse old tom/pepper/chilli compost ( assume ill need to feed) and wait for the rain to stop, also ill be growing mine in pots so all advice welcome.

Use whatever you have compost-wise and any sunny space.
My inspiration for sowing late came from a suggestion that - each time you pull up a potato plant you replace it with a couple of DFB seeds. 70 days to crop and you can cram in an extra crop before it gets too cold.

If we don't try we'll never know

My DFB s have doen well in pots this year. I'm a complete convert to putting things in large buckets as they can be moved about when required to make the most of space and sunshine. No reason for not using old tom/chili compost with some feed added. Sounds good to me.

Think I'll join you - nothing to lose and it'll help recycle some compost (with some fertiliser) from emptying the potato bags!

Ha ha - well my plan to join in with some late sowings failed dramatically as i have no DFB seeds left! Oops

i never need an excuse to go buy seeds - hence an overflowing seed tin lol!

I haven't grown DFB's for a few years as I much prefer runners so I've 3 packets languishing in the seed tin. But if you can sow them now for a late autumn crop then I'll give them a go, they'll be cropping as the runners finish

The sunny spot may be a problem as by late September the sun no longer reaches my veg patch - but - if I grew them in a pot they could go out the front on the lawn (aka grassy weed patch). Can someone tell me how many beans to a 10" pot?

I would think 4 or 5 would be enough for a 10" pot.

the other year i had some in the double glazed grow house,they were fine until the frost had em,i have some purple teepee & sungold,will try a flower bucket of each,the thing is,are they self pollinating,if so i can bring them inside if need be,am off to soak them in water overnight.

I grew purple teepee on the windowsill in my sitting room this spring and they pollinated fine. I did tickle the flowers a little to help things along - no idea if it was necessary.

I've sown 16 DFB variety Castandel in pots in the GH.

Forgot to say my beans had popped their head above the compost yesterday it took them took 9 days.

I've finally got around to planting my DFB into flower buckets using a mix of soil, used compost plus some out of my Dalek.
So was wondering how's everyone else's are getting on ?

Mine were moused in the seed trays but I was convinced some must have survived - so I waited, and waited.............
Tipped the trays out yesterday and just a few half beans left.
I'll start some more today - thanks for the reminder.

I found that covering my trays with propagator lids kept the mice off the peas in my friend's greenhouse.
