another really really good for earliness one is a heritage variety called Outdoor girl, also very good cold tolerance.

I really liked growing that one, seemed so easy

I've read this thread through and through and am now totally confused as to what to try this year. Last year was a disaster - I grew Super Marmande (previous year was reasonably good) and Ferline, but I barely had even a green tom between them and I'm not sure whether it was me or just a bad year! I don't have a greenhouse and will be growing basket/patio toms but would like to go for something reliable for growing on the veggie plot outside - any suggestions for a good reliable outdoor tom to try would be most welcome.

Are you looking for Cordon or Bush varieties? I had a similar dilemma but wanted a cordon so went for Orkado.

I grew Red Pear last year, don't eat them myself but my wife loved them and they cropped well. Bonus was getting a free pack of seeds this month.

What would you recommend as a good cooking tomato for sauces etc?
This is only my second year growing and I don't eat tomatoes raw myself - although I will grow some cherry ones for my boyfriend and for roasting in a Med veg

I found Roma VF was quite good for sauces last year - its not as watery as some and has a reasonable flavour. I do like to add some Sungold though as it adds that bit more taste.

San Marzano is the best known for sauces but there are quite a few others around, google plum toms

I had a glut of cherry tomatoes and made a cherry tomato lasagne sauce

wow it was a revelation! , so sweet and tasty.

If anyone wants to try it ever I thought gardeners delight was good for sauce, sweet but not too sweet

Amish Paste is also a good tomato for making sauce.

Every year I grow Rio Grande for making passata and sauces.
TOMATO RIO GRANDE

Similar in shape to the Roma but more productive. Suited for cooking, sauces and preserving.

I've been hovering around the forum as a guest for about the last year, having gotten in to gardening around late spring, Unfortunately i was a bit too late and had to rely on a few plug plants donated by a friend.

Looks like the Sungold is a common favorite on the thread, so i think I'm going to go for that this year. I had fairly decent success with Money Maker, Tigerella and Ailsa Craig last year, so I'll exclude Money Maker andprobably do at least one of the other two... then do a painstaking amount of research in to another few

Lucky Leprechaun - Love this tom, similar to pantano but better and earlier (IMO) Needs to be eaten asap as it seems to lose its flavour quickly. Dwarf cordon with 6-8 good size toms per truss with approx 4 trusses.

I'm sure I read that this was a bush! That's what I did last year (I think!) I'Ve got some on the go again so'll train up two main shoots.

I took some seed from Crimson Crush last year, just to see what would happen!

About three or four have grown to the potato -shaped eaves sort, and with big buds so far, while some others have just started to become normal plants with well-spaced trusses!

The big ones seem to be growing rather like a Marmande tom, with odd side-shoots, and thick stems, which point to big ugly - but gorgeous - fruits, so I'll be interested to see what happens next!

Also, if we get blight, will they survive amongst the rest of them - mainly Sungold, Shirley and Marmande!

Dunno, but we'll see on my birthday, when we usually get the first tom...
