Should Runner Beans look like this?

Afternoon growers all, well I planted my RB plants in tubs as I see other do, about 2 weeks ago. They're not looking too well...

t looks like they've been burned around the edges of the leaves? I've pinched out the very tops that had flower buds on as suggested on here, but they've yet to really *take off* - they seem to have been this tall for the almost 2 weeks they've been in! What do they look like to you? They're pretty well shielded from the strong winds we had earlier in the week. Your thought please?

They look cold, and windblown and generally grumpy!

But I reckon they'll recover if the weather ever gets better.

I reckon muddled is right. But I wouldn't mind seeing a pic of a complete plant, just to see what's left since you pinched out the tops?

Hi Ange, it's really cold during the nights at the moment, runners won't put on a lot of growth in the cold. They look weather damaged, did you harden them off before you put them outside? I've only recently sowed my beans, they don't like the cold and you can't keep them indoors for long.

Hi muddled, Martin & Scarlet, well they're protected somewhat from the winds and are against the wall and get a good 6+ hours of sun each day! I expected them to take off by now, but although they HAVE a lot more flower buds on them, they're still no more than about 12" tall ... or am I expecting too much please? they were hardened off for about 3 weeks in individual tubs prior to being sown in large tubs. I'll get an image tomorrow and post, too late now, 8-)

Yes, you are expecting too much unless you live in the south of France? they won't take off just yet because the night time temperatures are much too cold. I don't know where your location is but until nighttime temperatures are consistently over 10c they won't grow much.

My runners have been out a week now and are reasonably well protected, but there still not moving, have a couple of leaves like yours.

A few good warm sunny days will really help, use the gardens greatest weapon 'patience'.

This time last year they'd have been romping away Ange, but this spring has been awful and lots of plants are suffering cold damage.

Don't be disheartened though....we're all in the same boat, having to choose between risking putting out plants in the cold......or watching them grow leggy and pale under cover.....or sowing so late we risk missing out altogether!
If the weather picks up we'll all be alright.
(but I'm sowing another lot....just in case)

Well mine, I think, are goners! Had a few which I had started to grow in pots but unfortunately they have gone and there is the tell tale sign of shiny silvery goo over the pots!! With a bit of luck the others have yet to germinate, have moved them to a safer spot just in case!
