The new ones contain composted garden waste which in theory is perfect but they harbour all sorts of undesirables and weedkillers

Yes, and most would not sell any.
For seed and potting on i like Jacks Magic.
But for filling tubs, etc, i just but the cheap stuff and mix it with well rotted hos muck and old MPC.

Thats maybe why so many bags have tears in them,people having a secret poke,have tried wicks,1year was great,the next bad,asda well,never again,the most reliable for me,price,getting to a store and results is B&Q,the odd bits that are not suitable for seed sowing,get put in the bottoms of tom,aub pots,with added home done compost,the same with used compost,add home rendered to use for potting on,works well for me,also keeps the costs down,

Plus one - as I said I bought 10 56 litre backs on offer earlier this year plus 500 extra points on GC card was a very good deal. 2.49 a back if I remember right.

My local garden centre sells 3x 50l bags of Westland MPC for �10, which works out at 6.67p/litre. However, the round trip to the garden centre is about 1 mile, so there is some saving in petrol costs - its about 6 miles round trip to the next nearest place (B+Q). Just a pity I can't carry the stuff home! (And no, I can't take a wheelbarrow - its across a busy main road and down a fast, narrow country lane with no footpath).

I got it from Bridgemere Garden Centre owned by Wyevale. They had quite a few different bags of compost on offer.

Managed to pick up two bags today for �2.49. Not sure why it was so cheap.

Wyev@le are selling last year's stock of 56l bags of NH peat free at half price (�2.49). I was offered it our local Wyev@le yesterday too.

Incidentally, the repackaged version of NH this year is the same (full) price as last year, except the new bags are only 50l in size.

I think one of the problems with the variability of compost was bought about by the proposed government ban on using peat (which seems to have died a death thank goodness). They were going from formula to formula trying to find a good one and they didn't ..........find one that is.

Alison, I don't think you can legitimately bang on about transporting peat based composts around this country when the product your recommending New Horizon uses as its main constituent coir which is transported half way round the world in great big ships.

Would certainly save me from looking like a compost perve, I always cop a feel but have never split a bag open.

I guess no one would buy the majority of composts if they could see before buying.

I like the NH Multi Purpose and the 125L B&Q Verve bales have been consistently good for me. Unfortunately the B&Q Peat Free has been unusable.

I have learned now to buy a single growbag or trial bag of any particular brand before buying lots as I have been disappointed too many times in the past.

Never seen coir in it. Described as being made from composted timber residue and composted green materials. Wouldn't use it if it was coir as I can't stand the smell of it!

From their website it states that's it's made from recycled renewable resources of UK origin so not shipped half way round the world at all. Also, the point I was making about transportation was regarding ALL compost etc which is why I try to minimise what I use but for what I do, I choose to boycott peat.

I think there will always be differing views on all things GYO from compost to slug pellets to weed killers. I think as long as we gather the info available then make an informed choice, that's as much as we can do.

Agree totally, accurate information and informed choice is the way to go and that will lead different people down different paths but hopefully conscious ones. What has annoyed me is people stating incorrect and unresearched comments and passing them off as fact.
