Seed Potato Varieties

What seed potato varieties do you grow? and which do you usually grow? I am looking at Heritage varieties this year as something a little different any ideas on these? Also what do you consider the best first early, second early and main crop potato?

I usually plant varieties depending there culinary use.
give there varieties early, second early and main crop potato that provide various culinary uses I suggest pick ones that fit how you cook instead how early they produce.

I like Lady Christl or Pentland Javelin for earlies and Charlotte or Nicola (both waxy) for 2nds
I don't grow maincrop as I have a small plot.

I tend to make it up as I go along when looking at all the different ones, getting a mix of earlies and late etc, always go for some of the wierd-ish ones such as highland burgandy and pink fir apple so I didnt grow something that everyone has from tescos, always plant more normal ones as well as they often have more yield
New for me this year are the blight resistant ones sarpo axona and sarpo mira , so I am more likely to have something if i get blight

This year I have Home Guard and Rocket planted already in the polytunnel

for main crop I'll plant, Pentland Dell, Arron Victory and Maris Piper

I'm for Lady Christl, Pentland Javelin and Charlottes too. I really don't have room for maincrops, but these give me spuds for 8 months of the year.

First Earlies: Wilja
Second Earlies: Red Duke of York
Maincrop: Sarpo Mira and Rooster

Last year was my first year of growing and I just grew Charlotte and Maris Peer. What a mistake. I was living under a pile of potatoes at one point as they all came at once, and being of the tender sort I was told they wouldn't store particularly well or stay long in the ground. Must have done something right though given the amount I got.

This year is my attempt at being a bit more sensible, but I have no experience in any of the types I'll be growing, so it will be a true potato adventure in my house.

Rocket, very early 'Earlies', usually have some first week in June. might try a few in pots/bags.
Charlotte, second Earlies, going to try some of these in bags and pots.
Romano, maincrop, blight resistant.

I love LadyC for first earlies, I also leave some in their containers for an extra few weeks they then produce some lovely bakers and chippers.

Main crop is my old favourite Picasso, I like the taste and find it suits growing in containers.

I was considering trying some Picasso and also some "salad blue"
Anyone tried these? My hubby is a bit daunted by the colour and doesn't think he could bring himself to eat one!

I am going to try growing some First and second earlies, some maincrop, and some late crop. Last year I did second and late crops and the late crop was astonishingly good for the short time they had to grow. They were vivaldi which is one of my favourites.

Definatily worth growing varieties you like to eat. Charlotte is very popular and nice to eat so I will be growing it for the first time this year. I will also grow arran pilot as firt earlies this year, I've had them before - very nice and my dad's favourite from when he used to grow them 30 years ago.

Lady Christl is another that people reccomend highly, and I will be growing that for the first time this year too.

I also plan to grow some Red Kind Edwards and a few other varieties I can't recall. I am planning on going to a potato day this Thursday and the advantage is that you can get lots of different varieties.

I've heard that the Sarpo perform well in blight resistance and from what I've seen on YouTube they crop well. But I have also heard that they don't taste nice. So I may just try a single tuber this year to see but I won't be growing loads till I know how they taste.

And having read this thread, I plan on trying Picaso (thanks PotstubsDustbins!). Sounds good and has good resistance:

I'm growing Rocket as earlies, which are currently chitting and will be planted shortly (under cover).
Charlotte for 2nd earlies - I grew these for the first time last year and they were brilliant.
Desiree as maincrop - I've tried others and always go back to these.
Sarpo Mira for blight insurance.

Cassablanca- chose as had best results in beechgrove garden trial
Anya - saw guy on youtube do well with them
Pentland Javelin- best cropper last year

Purple Majesty are fab. The kids soon get used to coloured spuds when they realise they taste just the same, and the antioxidants are really healthy. I had Highland Burgundy last year, which make the prettiest pink mash. They're a bit of a sprawling plant, though. Then if you grow a white variety too you can do red, white and blue roasties.
