Filling My new raised Planters

Well nect weekend I should have my two new raised planters

3x6x1

So what do I fill them with do I do bagged compost (this is going to be fairly expensive i think)

I have lost of soil but full of stones and old weed roots (this would need to be seived in)

Not sure what to do!!!

To fill mine I plan to sieve garden soil into a wheelbarrow, add a bag of compost and some vermiculite or similar, perhaps some manure? I guess it depends on what you plan to grow...mix and use to fill your beds.
Of course, if your beds are on soil and youv'e dug that over to start with, they'll already be slightly raised and will only need a top up.

Assuming that those dimensions are feet and not meters your bed has a volume of about 600 liters.. as muddled said, digging over the soil underneath would fluff it up a bit and then top it off with a mix. I plan on adding coi into the mix I'm going to fill my new bed with to help lighten the clay soil I have.

What type of soil do you have? I wouldn't add vermiculite myself as. I do have all the spent compost from my pots last year which is going to go in, pepped up with some low nitrogen fertilisers such as bone meal as the bed is for roots. For general fertiliser I would add blood, fish and bone instead.

In the bottom i use cardboard and news papers, these suppress weeds and retain moisture, also your own compost even if it is not completely finished, leaves, grass cuttings etc. You can also throw in woolen clothes. In the top 6 inches i used some sieved top soil mixed with multipurpose compost left over from last years spuds and tomatoes or bought new.

Ok Great as we have major weed problem the beds are going to be sat on weed control mats but I do have soil from the dug out bit.

So i will sieve that out and then I have some compost bags about 5 I will split betwwen the two and add some of the baove suggestd. I have some compost I can chiuck in from the bin ( compost bin needs moving anyway ( but this isnt rotted yet).

Soil type not sure its not heavy clay fairly light but very very stony. their are some pics in the 2015 calander but will add the work that was done this weekend below

Might be worth checking with your local council about free compost from their recycling. I did this when i put in raised beds a few years ago - not the best quality, with lost of chunky bits but they rot down over time, and I used old potato compost on the top with some added fertiliser.
