Shark Fin Melon Crop

Harvested the last of my shark fin melons yesterday. What a productive lot they are, 33 large fruit from 4 plants, I have 21 left after sharing with friends and family and I intend to save seeds for next year. They were grown next to winter squash but I don't think they cross pollinate being different species.

I made shark fin melon soup from them, a bit like vegetable spaghetti in texture and also they absorb whatever flavours you use with them having little of their own. I would think the only reason the are used to make an ersatz shark fin soup is the stringy texture you get when they are boiled akin to the flesh of some cartilaginous fish. I am convinced they are more than a one trick pony however and I am going to experiment more with them. If only one shark is saved by using them as a substitute it would be well worth growing and promoting them.

For some reason, Shark's fins make me think of Snadger I'm sure he grows them. I have some seeds but the thoughht of the texture has been putting me off sowing them. Its good to hear from someone who has actually eaten them

I've got loads this year too. Am thinking of roasting one this week as I do with spaghetti squash to see how that works with a tomato based sauce added afterwards as I'm not sure it's humanely possible to use them all in soup! 😮

Yeah, there's only so much soup you can consume, especially with 20 plus fruits left, before revulsion kicks in. You must be reading my mind Alison because I intend to roast one on Sunday � la spaghetti squash. We can compare notes on results

Nope......but I did mention fancying trying growing them after thy were grown on an allotment film by one of the plotholders. I'd always asumed they were in the shape of a sharks fin until then!
I've eaten shark before (well the damm thing wouldn't behave itself!) Cant say I was impressed with the taste so it must be the consistency rather than the taste that's appealing?

Shark Fin Melon Crop

Glad to be back today for the first time in months following a serious accident in early November which nearly done for me. To all awaiting shark fin melon seeds I can only sincerely apologise for the delay and say the first were posted out on Saturday last and the last batch tomorrow. I can't drive untill I get a medical all clear so I have to depend on the kindness of others to get around. Once again it is great to be back.

Just thought I might revive this thread. There were some seeds for sale on our favourite auction site for �1.50 including postage. I offered �1.20 just to see what would happen but whoever was selling them ignored me (can't imagine why)

Anyway, I took the huff and bought some off another punter for �1.49 delivery inclusive.

I like the sound of Shark Fin melon and its good to know they won't cross pollinate with my pumpkins or courgettes.

I'll keep you posted on the Scrapheap Challenge thread with how i get on with them
