My little boy was so excited about his first every growing experience and eagerly pulled out the carrots that have appeared to be happily growing for months only to find they were little maggot maternity wards! yuk! These have been planted in the square foot gardening grow bag thingys (brand new filled with new compost) and we are very strapped for funds so really need to find the cheapest way to stop this happening again. Also every time i try to plant cabbages i have lovingly nursed out into the garden... i return to see all the plant has been devoured! please help!

Tried fencing carrots with enviromesh several years and still had carrot fly attack. Now I cover completely and they are fine. I suspect this could be that the general population of carrot fly is higher at the allotment so with fencing you are bound to have some that find their way in, whereas in the garden I'd expect fewer. No evidence for it - just guessing!Originally posted by Deano's "Diggin It" View PostKG! If growing "Carrots" in bags! Try putting em on a raised base, a table, a box, at least 18" high!
The "Carrot fly" doesn't fly any higher!
Some say it's a "Myth" but it works for us!

The wind still pushes them higher so I've found that totally covering is the only option that guarantees it to be OK. I grow in the open ground (although my early crop in the tunnel don't need any protection) and actually find it easier to just drape enviromesh over the whole lot that trying to build a wall anyway. I tried fleece one year but it rips so easily that it's not worth it so fine mesh is definitely the way to go in my experience.Originally posted by Deano's "Diggin It" View PostKG! Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
