Harvesting garlic

I pulled some today to see how they were getting on (and because I'm ever so slightly impatient) and it made my entire garden smell of garlic! Couldn't believe how many roots they had too.

Do I leave them to dry now or can I use them straight away?

Use them straight away as green garlic, different experience, dry some for keeping...

Mine were so orange with rust there seemed no point in keeping them going. I've pulled the lot and am going to have a tear-inducing weekend of processing some of it into lazy garlic while the good bulbs dry. Even if some of them are tiny I am so pleased with the results - proper cloved bulbs where last year I had marbles.

Loads of stuff in my garden is rusty this year - we always have rust here, leeks in particular suffer really badly - but this year it's worse than normal. Garlic is orange not green or even brown, various weeds are rusty, some of my flowers have rust and I even found some rusty grass the other day! Suspect my brain's suffering from the same problem = maybe I'll try some of that gin someone suggested . Seriously though, I wonder why rust is so prevalent this year, and it seems to be both in the UK and over here in Brittany?

Some of mine are starting to flop over now. I guess that means it's time to lift and start drying them off?

Well! "Out they are"
Not the best crop! Had better! But happy with em!



Short of a good old "Frosting" the mild winter put paids to that!

But a usable crop non the less!

Mine were covered in rust again,,it didnt effect my onions but when i dug the garlic up i was pretty disappointed by the size again ,,,i left them to dry outside in the sun for a few days then stripped off the outer rusty leaves to check they were usable still took only 2 or 3 layers of dry leaves off to show healthy looking plants, will try growing in pots next year so im not wasting growing space for other things in case they are dismal again next year

Only had 3 bulbs tat the dog hadn't crushed but very pleased with the outcome of my first homegrown garlic
