Italian Tree Tomato

Has anyone on the vine ever grown Italian tree tomatoes? My nephew who lives in Madeira has sent me some seeds he obtained there from a local grower. I have been googling like mad about them and what info I get seems too good to be true

i am currently trying them .I so far have treated just like other tomatoes but they are growing rapidly. i think i will probably grow them in largest pot available in the polytunnel

Most cordon tomatoes will grow tall, like that, if they receive continuous heat, light, water and feeding.

They look like that in commercial glasshouses

Tomatoes are perennial plants and can grow very large. The problem with growing them here is that they need temperatures that are hard to maintain in a UK winter unless you are a commercial grower. I have never heard of Italian tree tomatoes before - maybe they are a particularly fast growing variety.

That's an impressive picture on Amazon, normally if tomato plants are left to go a bit wild with all those shoots they stop producing, or produce very little as the fruit does not set very well. Going by the reviews I do not think I will order any seeds just yet though.

Forgive the old photo of me in the 70's (notice the flared jeans!) but this was our first trial of high wire growing, as the plants grew higher we unwound a string that was attached to each plant and layered the stems on the peat bags. So this shows that cordon plants will grow over 25ft long and still produce a crop if feed correctly.

I like the idea of the Italian tomato trees, but I think I would need a new poly-tunnel just for one plant. I hope you that are growing them will keep us informed as to how you get on with them.

I am sowing the seeds (6) in the morning, maybe a little late in the season but I'll gve them a go anyways , I have a new 20x40ft polytunnel so I have plenty of room for it to grow although I am still a little sceptical. I'll keep updates on progress.

I started one from seed and its now about a foot tall, I have just planted it out on the allotment.

So will be interesting to see what happens, not expecting any fruit but will be interesting to see how it grows.

It was started a bit late, so its a trial tomato and hopefully it will do better next year, if I sow the seeds earlier.
