Starting Ginger ?

Hi all,

I just bought a Ginger root from B&Q.
Its about the size of a small fist.
Its in a plastic bag with compost, but the instructions don�t mention cutting it into pieces, so I was wondering if I have to use a piece this big ?
I don�t think it will grow anything bigger !

They look great. I did see 'Part 2' and was looking for 'part 1' first.

Looks like we use the same propagators. I currently have a Mango stone in mine, but a bit early to show yet.
Have planted a pineapple top, but the remaining leaves dried up almost immediately, so I don't know if the 'roots' are still growing.

Right - time to open the ginger & get cutting.
I tried pickling my own ginger last year, but I cheated by using the vinegar from a bought jar. It did the trick - it came out great. I have just bought a bottle of Rice Wine Vinegar for the next trial.

How big is the ginger now, I planted an aldi ginger root the start of march and it did nothing, took it from UK to Buglaria left it outside and have just found it now, not very big but its growing!

How odd, BB - your ginger looks nothing like the ginger I grew! Yours must be a flowering variety, not plain old root ginger.

I think BB's ginger isn't. I think it's more likely a cereal.

My B&Q planty stuff just didn't work.
I bought some basic cooking ginger and left it in my dark, spare room. All of a sudden, I saw several spruts. I cut them into chunks (like potatoes) & planted them.
Image 1 shows photo taken couple of weeks ago.

Whilst on here;
Image 2 shows a young Fig tree. I bought 4 which were o.k when bought them, but potbound. Like the nice guy I am, I repotted them, & gave one to my neighbour. (see; nice guy !?) I was a bit perturbed when they said it had died, as mine were alright. I gave them abother but kept theirs. Then the rest lost all their leaves and embryo fruits. I was about to throw this one away, when I noticed new shoots coming ! I suspect that council tips are full of fig trees that people thought had died !!

How do we know when the ginger is ready to harvest ?
Are mine to young to plant out ?

The ginger sends up sprouts which turn into tall bamboo-like leaves - I guess it is just a case of watering and keeping it warm until the tuber begins to fill the pot - and then you can harvest. Mine ended up about the same size as the chunk I planted so I don't think it is a good way of increasing your stock of ginger It is more an experiment really. I wouldn't plant outside unless you live in the tropics.

Any idea how tall they grow when mature ?

The leaves die back in winter. The height will depend on how much sunlight they have managed to get - indoors they can get a few feet tall.

Does size matter ? (tee hee).

I have a no eyed deer what to strive to. They look healthy now, so I want to keep 'em going.

I'll have to re pot them at some point, but don't want to go down the fig tree root (sorry 'route').

A parrotly figs need to be pot-bound(ish) to fruit.

I love Pickled ginger & started to make my own.

PS: Elsewhere on here, I have a job to keep Mango trees going. I can start 'em, but they die after one or two seasons. Its such a shame when you see the initial, lush green foliage that they kick out.
