    Can't you put them outside? They aren't terribly fragile, they can stand a bit of cold (just bring them back in at night for the next 5-7 days)

      I'll give that a go. I'll have to put them out of reach of the hen and hope the heavens don't open and bash them to oblivion, but it seems like a good move. After a week of that do you think they'd be okay to plant out?
      Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

        If I spaced my lettuce out to 18 inches I would have room for about three, I do exactly what Two Sheds does, I plant them at six inches but harvest every other one when they are not too big then let the others grow on. Doing this means one sowing can get you lettuce for quite a long time.
