Haha the light frame won't fit in that gap so I put it on the floor the dog knocked a tray over and my little girl snapped a chilli plant so if I use Lego then the bulb fits in that area so no more mis-haps......... Hopefully

Just curious, are they on the "warm side"? I put my Cabbagey things in the cold greenhouse and try not to give them any extra heat.

If the correct tubes are used, it should not throw out heat, it's the light you are after.

Yeah you have to use a special bulb I use t5 practically no heat

Sure, but I got the impression, probably wrongly, that they were all in a heated environment (as together with "Tomatoes, cukes").

The question was ............what's under your lights NOW, not how long will they be there!
This time of year, I start all my seeds indoors in props, some heated, some not, then move them under the lights until they look strong enough to go out in the GH.
The lights are just lights - not heat. The only heat is whatever is in the utility room where the lights are.
Dunno whether what I do is right or wrong, but it seems to work

The heat comes from the room the plants are in, if it's heat & light you are looking for then grow lights in a greenhouse may be the answer.

Good point. I knew there would be an explanation, 'tis why I asked I too have had cold-preferring plants under my lights for a week or so after germination so they get a wiggle on, and then moved them to cold greenhouse. Onions for example. My Brassicas don't qualify for any special treatment though

Clearly works for you I grow my Toms and Cues soft, always have done (along with many people I expect) as I want them to get to flowering and fruiting soon. Plenty of evidence that stressing them does that too, maybe better (although Monty Don, Gardeners World last year, had several in clay pots half filled with compost which he had been assured would stress them into early, and heavy, production and I don't remember it turning out like that for him ...).

My lights are in Home Office, so same temperature as house, around 20C, so Toms etc. happy, but I think it is a bit warm for things that want slower start. I have Metal Halide (for plants with canopy) and T5 rig for seedlings side by side. Metal Halide moves out into [cold] Conservatory around mid March so that plants get daylight during the day, and supplement light for part of the night (Metal Halide gives off lots of heat, so that also helps with any low-temperature nights)

I obviously didn't express myself very well:. It was the combination of Toms & Cues with Brassicas that I was interested in, as I think of them as needing different temperatures. VC has given me the explanation now

A professional set up does have a little bottom heat and a lot of top light to encourage root growth but most gardeners/allotmenteers will only have lights there using for a little head start not for commercial purposes

Thats all way too technical for me Kristen
This is only my 2nd year with any sort of lights - last year, I made a Blue Peter light and I don't actually think that counts

I'm very random, haphazard and always believe that everything will grow, whatever I do or don't do. I would never have thought of using lights until I read about them on here
