Planting a tomato hanging basket

I have some 16 inch self watering hanging baskets that I am going to plant some tumbling tomatoes in. How many plants can I put in one basket? I was thinking I could put three around the edges and a basil plant in the centre, but then I thought that the tomato plant at the back wouldn't get enough sunlight. So would it be better to put the tomatoes at the front and sides of the basket, with the basil at the back? If so, how many tomato plants should I put at the front and sides? The varieties are Gartenperle and Torenzo. Thanks

Last time I grew a hanging basket tomato plant it was huge and far too big for more than one in a basket. Tomatoes need a lot of water to be successful, even a self watering basket will struggle with more than one plant

I plant 2 gardenpearl to a basket hanging or on the wall, I wouldn't put the basil in there as the tomatoes grow rampantly and will crowd it out.

Well according to Thompson & Morgan Terenzo plants have a spread of 16", so 1 per basket I would think. Tomato 'Terenzo' F1 Hybrid - Tomato Seeds - Thompson & Morgan

Personally I wouldn't bother with Gartenperle. Lots of tomatoes, but none of us like the taste of them.

Thanks everyone. Sorry if this is a silly question, but if the plant has a spread the same as the basket size, won't that mean it will stay within the basket and not tumble over the sides? I thought that was the point of tumbling tomatoes, so that they hang down.

No the spread determines the girth of the plant not the length it will grow to. I wouldn't put more than 1 per basket as they will fight for nutrients and water resulting in a poorer showing of fruit if you are not religious with their care

You could always plant some quick growing plants like radish or lettuce which will be removed by the time the tomato really gets going

As tomatoes are hungry plants they are one of the few who I follow the spacing instructions for. Leave it at one plant per basket otherwise you'll end up with less fruit.

Deffo no more than one plant per basket. I tried two some years ago t'was a disaster.

This is one Tumbler per basket in 2013, the baskets are woven 12" square x 12" deep.
