october planting of broad beans

I sowed mine in a raised bed last year, fleeced the bed! Did fine for me!

Sure some more experience "Broadie Growers" will point you in the right direction!

Does that apply no matter how harsh the winter is? Even if we have some of those lovely -17deg temperatures?

i sow mine in large cell trays (15 cells to a seed tray) - give them a month to put on some growth then plant out in freshly dug (weed free) soil - they get a good headstart over the weeds
i don't cover mine - they're fine out in the open

I think the way the weather is being of late (by that I mean recent years, not days/weeks) it's anyone's guess. Plant 'em and see what happens I say. Try both and see which fares best.

I heard the traditional sowing date was the 26th Dec. Presumably to avoid the washing up.

I'll be getting mine going end Oct - Early Nov, probably in paper pots to start and in the ground when their heads are up.

I'll be growing a mix of Super Aquadulce and Grano Violetto (both winter hardy).

So was I RL, lol . I heard about ppl with -17deg in't chilly north of UK last year... We were lucky here, reasonably mild if very very long and grey. Expecting it much worse this year though, will keep the fleece on hand just in case I think .

I'm going to overwinter some in the polytunnel this year - planted them in Jan last time but am going to see what happens with an earlier set. My main crop however will be from sowings in modules for outdoors next spring.

I got an allotment only a few weeks ago and bought some broad beans the other day to be my first 'crop'

I'll put them in the ground straight, but will sow a few in toilet rolls inners, in case some don't germinate.

Looking forward to my first green shoots from my allotment

I have tried planting broad beans early and late but find mice love them and hardly any emerge. Apart from starting them off in trays any other tips?
