Onions

Does anyone know of any over wintering onion sets I can plant either in the poly tunnel or outside?

I grow Senshyu Yellow, but pop along to a garden centre in the next few weeks and there should be plenty to choose from.

radar is fairly bullet proof, fine big onions that dont often bolt. I've grown them inside and out. Inside they grow huge and you can have them harvested by early June.

Troy are the ones I've used for the last couple of years to good effect. Senshyu are the original and still excellent Japanese onions but its Troy from now on for me!

PS It hasn't got anything at all to do with my OH being called Helen btw!

I always put my onions/shallots/garlic in ....in November/December and find that any of the types on sale at that time work OK.

I have tried lots and lots of different ones. To me, almost as though sacrilege, an onion is an onion. I have had more success with the over wintering ones. Though last winter was a bit rubbish. I will be planting october/november, i think, and through cardboard.

I planted my senshyu seeds beginning of September and they have sprouted nicely, about 3 inches actually!

They are in those seed cells in the GH as I don't grow stuff in the garden, only in pots or in GH

My question is, how long should I leave them in the cells, and what would be the best size pot to grow them on in?

I plant mine late sept/oct outside. That's quite early planting especially as they are in the GH.
I would pot on, next pot size up.
