HELLO, MY NAME IS MICH, Im new to the forum and to veg growing. I have some carrots which appear to have quite big lumps of clear jelly stuff, If anyone has any ideas what this is would be most grateful.. CHEERS MICH

Funny you should say that, Mitch - I've the same in a trough with carrots growing - I didn't give it much thought, suppose I just thought it was potting compost with those gel crystals in which absorb water (could be, in my case). Where are your carrots - ground or container, and what soil are they in?

Might be on the wrong track totally - I'm new too - but other bright grapes will be along soon to let us both know, I'm sure.

My other thought was slug / snail eggs but don't wanna alarm anyone without reason so photos would help

HI, its actually on the soil not on the carrot tops, they are growing in a deep grow bag, they are baby carrots!! ive since heard that carrots dont do well in bags but you live and learn hey!!, they seem good at the mo. CHEERS MICH

Carrots will grow fine in bags, pots and any other container - show carrots are always grown in specially made pipes or deep boxes - you just have to watch and not over or under water them.

OH GOOD,glad to here that, i started off with some strawberries for my children and im now growing cucumbers,peppers,chillis,spring onions,potatoes,carrots,tomatoes,sweetcorn,and radish.All of which seem to be doing great considering i dont really know what im doing!!!! CHEERS MICH

I grew carrots this year in pots for the first time. I've previously had very iffy results - huge gaps in rows which I though was failure to germinate. One of the pots in my greenhouse had slug slime and about half as many tiny seedlings as the other. I reckon my previous problems have been down to slugs and I never thought of protecting them from that. Now carrots in the garden are netted and slug pelletted and those in the pots also have a few blue granules. No further problems!

I too thought I was having carrot germination problems at my allotment but I fear as I didnt pellet them, the slugs have had a feed. As I had so few growing on one of my rows, I've actually planted a half row more of spinach in their place.

Carrots annoy me because they can take a while to germinate and then seemingly take ages to thicken up - what's the deal? How hard can it be for it to grow a root?

I really have to stop looking at them - I am sure that's the secret.

Have you noticed how much more frustrating it is to grow underground crops which you can't see? Drives me mad!

Some grow bags have water retention stuff in the growing medium. Does it say anything about it on the bag?
