Re manure for potatoes - I always grow a few earlies in buckets in the greenhouse, and this year I thought I'd be clever and grow them in a richer medium than just the usual garden soil, so I used the bottom scrapings layer of my compost heap, lovely I thought. It's the poorest bucket crop I've ever had, they took ages to get started and in the end I gained no time at all over the outside grown ones. You live and learn....
