  • Spuds - Advice please

    Hi all,

Just harvested my earlies that were grown in buckets, had a very decent crop. My question now is... Is I to late to plant maincrop spuds in the empty buckets I now have??

Also (sorry for the Q's) I have some early seed potatoes left over, what will happen if these are planted now, anyone tried it?

    Thanks

Yes, plant them. It's not too late.

Earlies mature quicker than maincrop, so planting earlies now means a crop in < 14 weeks. If you plant main crop you'll be looking at c. 18 weeks which might be too long.

Depending on the variety main crop can take up to 24 weeks.

I would go with your remaining earlies.

Maincrop?...Ah- just stick them in...you can always stick a bit of fleece over them later on in the year if they don't come on fast enough!

Earlies ?- mine went in 2 weeks ago and some are just poking through the soil!
            Go for it

One of the problems with growing in containers is that they are much more susceptible to frost as it can attack from the sides as well as the top.

              Been there done that.

You also have the possibility of blight to consider. A lot of early varieties are very susceptible which is why we try to get them in as soon as possible so we get a decent crop before the dreaded B strikes. Having said that, I'd still plant em cos if you don't you'll certainly get nowt.
