How high are you going to make it Bren? I grew Black Tuscan last year and had to take my netting off when the kale was pressing on the top, which was about 2ft 6" high.
I need something taller but I don't know if I could self-build anything taller without it being rickety, I don't have room (or skill) for major 4 x 4 type cage construction.

The Kale usually grows between 4 to 5 ft so I need something at least that tall so I'll give it a go with some 6ft canes with a foot in the ground then my hoops on top should work.

I know its costs money but..........what about one of those blowaway walk-in GHs without the cover. Cover it with netting instead. Maybe you can find a frame being given away on Freecycle or summat.
You're making me think about this too as I'm hoping to have a kale jungle here, amongst the trees Its unlikely to work but if I don[t try, I'll never know

Kale in the trees might go unnoticed and not need netting.........what kale are you growing......Nero?

All sorts of kales - whatever I can lay my hands on I have at least 6 so far
My theory is that, I can't grow summer veg under the trees because its too shady but, after October, the leaves will have fallen and there'll be plenty of light for over wintering veg. Also, kale are pretty big, sturdy chaps, and should be able to withstand rabbit attack more easily (I hope)

I put some kale in my flower beds, underneath some elders and sheltered by an old stone wall. They've survived and are doing well. The kale is the garden is tattered and a bit rough looking.

I think the one's in the flowerbed are in stealth mode ...

My Black Tuscan Kale is looking tatty now but there's still a few meals left on it, its a pretty plant so never looks out of place wherever you grow it.

We've redesigned my brassica cage this afternoon its now 5ft tall by 7ft long, the debris netting isn't fixed in place I just wanted to try it for size.

I used canes and some old tennis balls last years and that worked quite well, admittedly no snow.

I did this with debris netting and believe it or not it didn't collapse although 2 canes snapped.

Looking good Bren, it should do the job no problem the highest my Tuscan got was 5ft pretty much exactly.
