Although I do love growing for exhibition, my primary love is just growing for the kitchen. The camaraderie and encouragement enjoyed amongst the exhibiting fraternity just isn't experienced in any other sort of competition I have experienced.


I have fears that this outfit will try to portray growing for exhibition as being a cut throat, cut competitors plants to pieces affair and for that reason alone I ceratinly will have nothing to do with it.

Think I'll stick with Beechgrove Gardens, have I already mentioned it starts again on the 4th of April (Mr Frosty's birthday, he will he 55)

I have a feeling that they're planning a big brother type programme and hoping for lots of discord between gardeners . P'haps a load of us should do it just to screw their plans up

You mean have a love in on the plot but tangentise everythingso that it can't be followed? if that's the case I nominate VC and one of her comrades. WOuld be an absolute hoot

I do like watching tv gardening progs though Twosheds. Sometimes when it's freezing out I get snuggled up on the settee with a brew and the dog and just float away watching the world's of other peoples gardens, that I probably can't afford to replicate - but I can dream! I'd do it if it wasn't about competing, as, if I saw someone struggling I'd go off and help them, and you probably aren't allowed to do that! I hope it's not all bitchy and back-bitery or that'll be just rubbish and not at all like it really is.

I could do the veg-growing bit, I could do the chutney making bit, but 'a flower arrangement fit for a queen'?! She could have a bunch of broccoli and carrot tops and be happy with it Plus, I have 'a face for radio' as they say, wouldn't fancy being on the telly...

I think you're being a bit presumptuous, and a bit negative, if I may say so.

I don't think it was negative at all, was a perfectly good point. It makes me rather sad that everything seems to have to be a competition these days. Competition is fine if that's what you want and you don't trample all over people (have seen this far too often which is a real shame) but not everybody is competitive and I tire of being told that I should compare and compete. A bit of balance would be lovely. I have no interest and don't need my ego boosted by being given a top dog sticker or whatever. I grow for taste, table and my mental health, no further reward required.

On a note related to the original post, I do wonder if they're not getting a very good response as they've been asking for a while for volunteers now and I've received e-mails and forum posts on several occasions now. Suppose if they're not willing to provide further info then it won't be helping.

Ok, I am a,very competitive person, but when it comes to gardening, I think it is all about taking pride in your own produce.

Being a newbie, I cannot describe the sense of satisfaction I had in being able to state that all veg on my Christmas dinner came from our garden. That is about as far as it gets
