Replanting last years little onions

I have read on here about replanting any little onions grown from seed last year,and they did ok,i have lots of the things,so what would size would be the largest to replant,that will carry on growing into an adult,instead of splitting into several spring onions,or is it plant it and see,some are just to fiddly to prepare,and no,we no not do pickled onions,thanks peeps,i have already put some in seed tray

LD, you may just have inadvertantly created onion sets and of course onions grow very well from sets. On the other hand, the onions may not accept the label and decide like all youngsters do that they are adult and decide they wish to procreate and throw seed heads. I'd take the chance out of sheer interest.

thanks AB,they were kings mathoth,i was so proud to have grew some from seed,and disapointed they only reached set size,with some aprox larger sets aprox 3.5 cmt accross,so yes,i will plonk the rest of them into seed trays,inside the grow barn,to root,then plant out when things warm up,if they run to seed,at least i will know for future,as will other peeps reading this thread,i also have a few 100 little seedlings at different stages so far this year,am hoping to actually grow an onion from seed,instead of sets,

If they do run to seed, let them - the flowers are really pretty, are great for bees - and you will, of course, have loads of onion seeds ready for next year!

I always have leek seed head,i agree they do look nice,plus the bees love them,

I had the same happen one year with red onions, but I can't remember the name. I didn't get round to lifting them, so they stayed in the same place. When they started growing again I ended up with onions rather than seeds. Still not big, but acceptable for kitchen use. Can but try
