Gherkins

I grew them last year but the problem I had was picking enough to preserve in one go even if I kept them in the fridge. By the end of the week when I had 7/8 they had lost their freshness

I have a jar of pickling vinegar ready, then I add dill seeds and other stuff to mine, each day harvest and rub them off under cold water to remove spines and pop in the jar. I don't salt them anymore or do anything else. They stay crunchy.

Mine did rubbish this year , but that was down to the weather and the snugs. I usually grow in the soil at the lottie and have never had a problem before, in fact the only problem was the amount ..... I do have a rather nice indian gherkin pickle recipe if anyone wants it, goes lovely with curry but needs to mature before using .

If you have 2 greenhouses I'd definitely keep varieties apart.

I have no idea which variety I grew last time. I'll have to dig the box out later and see.

Think you grew Piccolo Di Parigi because I have a lady bird packet and a HOOGE packet of my own. Want some back?

Definitely yours, I'd know that pack anywhere. Maybe it was one I gave you. You can have some from each next time I see you. In fact you can also give me a lesson on how to save a gherkin seed as my Rouen ones are down in number. Either that or I'm making you its seed guardian

Saving the seed is easy. It's the hand pollination that's a little more difficult!

Could anyone tell how big the Cornichon de Paris gherkin plants grow? I would like to plant some this year but have very limited space.

Of the seeds I managed to rear, each plant reached about 5' in height njc, are you growing in containers or in the ground?

I might plant these if they really can manage happily in a pot on the patio.
