  • Growing autumn onions from seed

    Hi fellow gardeners,

I've decided to grow onions from seed this autumn. I planted Senshyu seeds in a mix of multi-purpose compost with John Innes seed compost, in modules, in mid-August (when it was advised for the northern part of England.) My onions have germinated & are growing nicely. They have at least 3 leaves at this point. My question is this: Now that I have lovely onion plants growing (they're still on a shelf outdoors,) should I plant them out in their raised bed for over-wintering, or should I just leave them in the modules until spring. And if I leave them in the modules, should I put them in my (unheated) greenhouse or polytunnel? Or continue to leave them outdoors?

    Many thanks,
    Phyllis

    Hi Phyllis
Last year I grew Hi ball from seed and as you have done, I sowed in modules and left them to germinate... Then in late October, I lifted full contents from each module and direct planted into the ground. They grew very well and I harvested in June and July...
Am doing same again this year and will also plant Radar sets..
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

    ...utterly nutterly

Hey, thanks for those encouraging words! I think planting them out in late October will work for me, too. The bed I'm putting them in is well drained, so hopefully, even if we get a wet winter, I'll get a good crop. Good luck with yours!
