    I do broadly the same as PTD (Colin) and sow only small amounts more or less constantly except in the very coldest weather. Even small seed like carrots is sown individually rather than scattered. It's a bit of a fiddle till you get the hang of it but if you space them about an inch apart each way there's no thinning. I know people say you can use the thinnings but I always find those tiny carrots more of a bother than they're worth. Just got a freebie packet of mixed salad leaves so will be sowing them in small pots over the coming weeks.
