Kidney beans germinating in pod

I've just started to pick the pods of my various beans for drying as the pods are going brown and starting to rustle. This year a number of the red kidney beans have started to germinate in the pods. I've never seen this before and assume it is because the last week has been really hot - mid to high 30s - and humid.

We are eating them as shell beans because I guess they won't keep. Now it has turned cooler I'm in two minds as to picking all the rest and drying off the plant/out of the ground or hoping they just start behaving!

I had that last year, which was also wet well into autumn. I didn't get as many dried as I usually do

I've had this happen too. Beans that are drying with splits in the pod let water in and they germinate. This usually happens when it rains frequently and everything is slow to dry(damp). Sometimes it is better to finish dry them inside on a drying rack.

Good advice...often struggle to dry beans on the plant....this year the slugs grazed off two plantings before they got up the wigwams. So sadly I have none to dry. How has the season been in the states?

Hello Dusty and Welcome from me too! The USA is a very very big country with lots of different climatic regions that we find it hard to reckon with! If you could narrow your location down to a state it would help us to understand your local growing conditions

I've had drought and an extended heatwave to deal with. I plant my beans in the ground. There was no blossom set for about five weeks due to temps hovering in the upper 90's(F) with only a couple short rains. I was able to use a water pipe to quench their thirst, but I'm well behind schedule in the production department.

Too much rain in the UK this year must have led to record number of slugs. Have you ever tried putting beer in jar lids on the ground to drown slugs?
