you can cover with fleece or mesh instead of using collars.Comment

The only bought ones I have used are made of felt and don't compost well with me. I also find they are very hard and chafe the plant stems sometimes so badly that the plant collapses. That's why I started using carpet underfeltComment

I cover my brassicas with enviromesh from the start and therefore don't have to worry about flies, butterflies or birds. Slugs can still be an issue but not having anywhere to hide helps to spot them.
