The slugs have mown down the carrots. Again.

After two failed sowing, any thoughts on how I might succeed third time around? Or I should I give up (which would be a shame, as I like a carrot)?

Grow them in containers. Put fine mesh fabric in the bottom to stop slugs getting in through the drainage holes - polyester net curtain material should work well, then smear the outside of the containers with grease and sprinkle salt onto the grease.

If you must grow them in the ground, use nematodes until the carrots are big enough to resist an attack and check them for slugs every evening just in case. A swift snip with a pair of scissors seems effective at halting a slug's appetite. Use the scissors on the slug, not the carrot.

doing mine in big tubs in the green house, raised up from fly and copper tape round to keep off the critters, will see how they do, but ALL have germinated.

I've sown my latest lot in the tunnel next to a row of spring onions in the hopes it'll help to disguise them. I'm smothering everything with (organic) slug pellets in there at the moment because as fast as things grow they get sliced off and eaten. But I'm going to make a stinky garlic solution and water everything in sight tomorrow, having read a couple of times recently (including this month's gyo which finally arrived today!) that garlic seems to be extremely effective against slugs - we shall see!!

Sown ten packets. Cold and damp stopped the first five packets germinating and the second five packets have only germinated sparsely. Either that or the slugs have decimated them even though they have slug pellets arround them

Sowed mine last week and covered with environmesh but I'm not holding out much hope. Watercress and rice would have more chance.

Got a spray bottle today just for anti-slug garlic spray. Gonna get a first batch brewing tonight because they've been ruthless with my veg too! Ignoring the carrots but loving the selection of brassicas I'm trying to grow for winter.

Pa Snips advice to use nematodes is sound. They do work and continue to work so long as there is a population of slugs. Expensive I know but the benefits are long term as removing breeding slugs from the equation reduces numbers in future years

Me neither ~ it's been too cold & wet to work, and whenever the sun comes out for a few hours there's a huge list of other jobs to catch up on.

I think it's going to be a carrotless year (no chillies either)

I'll be re-sowing mine tomorrow as well, because they've all been munched down to the ground. Same with the school ones They've also munched all of my seed sown onions, all of the celeriac, most of the swedes, all of the calabrese, and all of my daughter's Minipop sweetcorn.

I've lost another two containers of salad and it will be my third sowing of carrots. Where are they all coming from these awful snugs. I dug up some container grown garlic today and the compost was full of slug eggs. Ewww.

Haven't touched my carrots but the Root trainers beans that were quite strong when planted out have been decimated...I hate them..
