If I need to transplant things a bit early on, I use bottle cloches over them if it's chilly at night. Protects from slugs and snails as well as keeping them a bit warm. I've just done it with squashes and courgettes and a couple of tomatoes which are probably technically a bit titchy to have put outside, but so far the bottles seem to be doing the job (hope I haven't tempted fate there..). I have to say I tried eggshell around the bases of some of them before adding the bottles, and it was completely useless, leaving one almost bald tomato, poor little thing, and badly munched leaves on some of the squashes . Last year when I tried using just the bottle bases around brassicas and beans, I cut around the top edges with pinking shears (zig zag edged scissors) to make it harder for the slugs to get over. Some worked, some didn't, but I'd cut them quite narrow so the beasties could probably still pole vault over the top - will know better next time!

Insy, going back to your original post I now presume you sowed all your seeds in one pot (or one pot per variety) - am I correct? I use celltrays and modules for things like sweetcorn and beans, then you don't have to uproot them too early.

I ran out of modules/cell trays :P and i was feelign lazy that day and didn't want to get on the bike and drive somewhere to buy some.

So i pulled out the Pots i planted 2 seeds per pot on all varieties, so i have atm 15 pots of each with 2 shoots in each pot. This gives me around 30 plants of each variety minus losses so around the 26 mark has come through.
