Is it too late for these veg

Running late on the garden schedule.

Wifey wants to go on holiday and thus I have to spend hours languishing in a pub when I could be in the garden.

Is it to late to sow
Sprouts (for Christmas )
Parsnips (for Christmas)
Celeriac (never tried it)
Leeks (Cause I love em)

I know the packs offer advice but experience counts for much.

I am sure I will be shot down in flames by other vines, but in my experience you can still plant parsnips and sprouts - and if it gets late you can alway buy <shudder!> plants from the garden centre to play catch up - not the parsnips though!

First year growing leeks, so no idea there, no idea about celeriac.

And what's wrong with languishing in the pub?? A nice glass of white wine for me, please!

Throw them in and see what happens. Everything is late this year anyway. I'm growing celeriac for the first time too but I've already planted my sewings on my plot. My pack of seeds suggests it's too late to sew now but hey ho! Sew a few and save the rest for next year.

As PnK says you should still get away with parsnips and sprouts, i'm sure i was reading something (cant remember where...it's an age thing ) that said the parsnips would be young and tender if planted later, by that i take it they meant small my sprouts were planted a couple of weeks ago and are doing well. We are forcast for a good July and August so that should give everything a boost and help it grow.

Sorry dont know anything about Leeks never grown them(dont know why cos i love them ) same for celeraic.

now wait for the experts to correct me

Don't forget that Jimmy's growing season will end a couple of weeks earlier than yours P&K. I used to live in Croxley Green and am still getting used to the shorter year up here.

Celeriac takes AGES to grow, I start it in Feb and it's not even ready to eat 13 months later!

Leeks you can sow now, but they'll only become baby leeks. Still tasty though.

I've sown parsnips in June before, but they didn't come to anything (my soil is too dry for them really, they never really do well for me)
Sprouts: need a long time in the ground too (buy some plants?)

I will be sowing some more sprouts today as i only have one decent seedling come through - last year i had more than i knew what to do with - this year they haven't taken so well. Got nothing to lose but a few seeds so may as well give it a go.

Personally I think it's too late for anything of any size now although you would get some baby leeks and titchy parsnips. I find that I need to sow sprouts back in March and celeriac even earlier although both seem to be particularly slow growing this year so I'm not holding by breath for a decent crop of either although all the rain should be good for the celeriac as it likes it wet and last year I didn't water enough.

I got back on Sat from a weeks holiday in the Lakes, it was wet although we did get some sun.
Sat afternoon it was chucking it down, I was in the greenhouse de-armpitting the toms.
I was very surprised that it was so cold in the GH that I could actually see my breath, flaming June and all!

Sprouts are possible.... but you'll be eating them in March not at Xmas
Parsnips will be fine..smaller is nicer to eat than woody
Leeks will stand till next April before bolting so you have plenty of later season ones
Celeriac... forget it...you'll be lucky to get them to golf ball size now. Save the seed for next Feb as TS suggests

I'm waiting for some sprout seed to germinate from a couple of weeks ago, the snugs took care of two lots of plants and I am growing on half a dozen sprouts until I think they are big and strong enough to withstand an attack. It'll also be my second sowing of parsnips as they didn't germinate. Loads of radishes that I sowed in between, but no sign of parsnip. I'm trying to sprout some in the airing cupboard, but they don't seem to be doing anything

2 weeks seems a long time for any brassica to germinate - mine usually come up at this time of year within a few days, might be worth you sowing extras just in case.

I lost my carrots, parsnips, celeriac and florence fennel to flood and couch grass. I bought some more parsnips and carrots and will be sowing them even though the season (for parsnips at least) is running away since they won't last til next year anyway. Plus I'm stubborn. Won't bother with the fennel and celeriac though.
