Bean Identification

Hi Folks,

Well here I am with a bean quandary!!

Planted 8 Runner Bean�s (Scarlet Emperor) and 8 Climbing Bean�s (Blue Lake) mid may.

8 of one have taken and 4 of the other, and unless you haven�t guessed by now I forgot what ones what!

I want to plant some more of the one where only 4 have taken, any easy way to identify?

Off the top of my head, I would say that the RBs would look sturdier, with thicker stems and larger leaves. I'd plant more of both anyway as this wet weather will bring out all the hungry slimeys!

Can you have a furtle and see what colour/shape beans failed?
Usually they are slightly different

Thanks for the responses, given the 8 also have a reddish stem they must? be the runners given the scarlet name?

te he!...no idea- this is my first year for decades that we're growing runner beans!

French beans have the halves of the seed still attached to the stem when they come up. Runners don't, they just have leaves.

Thanks eirish - that's my one new thing I've learnt today! Not that I doubted you, but I've been out in the rain and checked my seedlings and you're absolutly right. Why have I not noticed this before

Sorry you got wet on my behalf! I guess you must not be as sad as me, checking on my seedlings six times a day.

I started mine indoors and they're right next to each other, so the differences are really obvious.

Mine are in the same tray of root trainers, 4 each of about 8 different types of RBs and FBs - that's my excuse for not spotting the difference! They're sitting outside awaiting a dry spell to be planted out - come on sun!!

Whilst on my usual daily observation walk around all my beds (does everyone do this with loads of different faces made depending on how various things are doing?? !), I noticed that many of my beans have unfortunately been blitzed by the little fookers...

They seem to be working along the bean row, starting from the right-hand side - despite the blue pellets of death

Thanks for your advice, I've decided it's the cb's so planted some more, no loss either way

I planted my Scarlet Emporer Runner Beans direct in the bed. They are coming up nicely, thank you! Some are as big as 10cm.

But their stems are not red! I think the red bit refers to the flowers....

Hungry now......
