    I would think it also keeps water away from the stem, which in turn will help prevent stem rot - something I believe courgies can be prone to.

      That's what I thought! Time to sink the bottles back in I think Or perhaps I will leave for next year.

      Update on my wilting courgette - it looks happy as Larry now so I am chuffed. The beans on the other hand all died but I had a few spares and they are doing well... I think the cooler weather is helping.
