Yeah right, very helpful! So I go to a builder's yard and ask for "A big chuff off stillage" please. Any bright ideas about what the answer might be???

The crate in your picture (I would guess it to be approx 20" deep x 40" square) should be plentiful in your area VC,it is what I would expect roofing slates to be transported in,have an ask around any of your local builders merchants &/or quarries

The pallet collars Alldigging refered to are four sided bands that drop onto standard Euro-Pallets & then onto another band to increase height in modules to suit the size of the goods contained (generally bands are approx 6"-10" deep)

Almost spot on BB. 3' x 3'6" x 20" deep. I'll ask my local builder, he did tell me I could help myself to his wood pile at the farm and I think that's where he keep the old pallets too. Then all I have to do is persuade his gofer to drop them off to me

You want to try tile suppliers VC, they generally carry travertine tiles in crates just like those. They are very robust.

I know of one near llantrisant called Multichoice tiles, the boys there are always happy for someone to take away their excess pallets.

Oh no, That one stays here but a new one wouldn't come amiss - and I know just the tree for it - its the one thats the Avatar on the new group. You'll see it has a rope up it, it also has climbing pin things in the trunk and was. reputedly, a communication tower for the mine??? I don't understand what that means but I'm intrigued by it! Sadly, I've no head for heights so I'm never likely to climb it

yep,i'm a plank never allowed for any space between the tile rows (42"),basically they are crated tile standing upright on end (20") in four rows (10" wide),now wondering how many in a row although that may vary on exact thickness Way back in 1972 two Welshmen taught me how to cut slates using a slaters axe & anvil,they were re-roofing the house at the same time as I was decorating the exterior.

Back to the original question, I'd find some more pallets, pile them up, plonk that on top and use it for a seat.

This house was re-roofed using the original slates from the house on the front and new foreign slates at the back where they're not visible. The original slates were of 3 different sizes so it was a challenge finding enough of the right size and in good enough condition. Another lot of slates were used for the log store. I love slate. Have you been to the Slate Museum at Llanberis - they demonstrate slate splitting and use water powered energy to operate the machinery.
The builder's took away the crates that the slates came in, thinking they were doing me a favour - but i asked for one back!!

I have been to the slate museum many times, watched the demonstrations a couple of times too. We love and are very familiar with the area. Just reading about this bought back some wonderful memories of happy days. We will be visiting again in August.

VC I have bandages and crutches you can borrow. Just smile sweetly but with a hint of underlying agony and a lot of men are quite willing to help you out. Worked for me yesterday at B&Q.

I don't actually need the crutches any more. I just have a bit of a limp.
