Is it warm enough to plant out my runner beans?!

I live in the North West, only a chance of overnight frost left.
When can I plant them out without covering them up?
They are at least a foot high!

Next week looks promising round here. The main worry I have is wind (No VC not that complaint). Runners tend to have large leaves and these are easily damaged by wind. I therefore fleece mine until they are well settled and strong enough to cope.

I've had hestia beans planted out in my Blackburn raised bed for a fortnight but plastic bottle cloched them and they seem to be okay and growing albeit not as fast as the greenhouse ones. That said the bed is protected from the wind but only gets 5 hours of direct sun. Best of luck with your runners. P

I'm going for some with a direct sowing tomorrow .........a bit of frost may knock them back a bit but I've found they come back again (well they did last year )

I have about forty assorted runners and frenchies waiting patiently in the greenhouse. Even though temps next week are set to be reasonable I'm not risking it till the end of the month. Been caught like that before and another week indoors won't kill them.

It's still too cold at night here. I planted some out last weekend to see how they fared, then the temps dropped even lower, to 3c at night

I checked on them y'day: they're paler and the wind & snails have done some real damage to the leaves.

So, the rest are staying in my gh at night until outside temps are at least 9c

put some out around 10 days ago and theres nothing left, a combination of wind, snails , cold and wet. still got a load in the gh and ill wait now for a general consensus that its warm enough! :P

Mine are out during the day then back into the greenhouse at night and I'll be doing this until the end of the month.

I'm a bit further north and east than you, but I planted some runners around a 'wigwam' and made a wrap-around of some bubble wrap, hopefully that wll give them enough protection for the next couple of weeks, until, hopefully some better weather arrives.

I put my 5 out in pots, they have some wind damage and slug/snail too. I have a cover ready for them if there is a frost.

No room to keep them in but have a crop starting.

I find it less bother and hassle to sow outside rather than grow on indoors. I put my beans to sprout at the beginning of the week, and planted them outside yesterday with 1cm root showing from the bean. They may be a week behind indoor grown ones, but they have no check and seem to catch up OK. Was going to mulch them with H/M compost but I've just stuck 2 baby bear squash plants in the top of dalek instead.

I have to say that I sewed my climbing beans way too soon as I've never grown them before so they've been in my conservatory ever since.

Mine have got very long and straggly and have been trying to grow up each other and everything near them. Time to put them out asap I would think.

Would it be an idea to cut them back to a couple of pairs of leaves to make them a bit more managable? Or will that put them off totally?

mine have all been out since last weekend, a few looked weakened but now they are recoveing strongly. sowed another trayful just in case...
