My poor-snips

I know we're still in drought down here, but I've had enough rain for now. It has killed about 2/3 of my snips . Not amused as I had been very conscientious in chitting, potting into loo rolls, planting out and spread a few slug pellets around for good measure. Can we have a bit more sun like at the weekend? Please? At least that gave me a chance to resow direct. Fingers crossed. Will that work, or is it a bit late? Anyone else had too much of a good thing?

It's not too late to resow. Sow directly in the ground ans station sow, several seeds to a station and then thin to one when they are large enough.

I did that ^^^ 3 or 4 weeks ago with radishes sown in between to mark the rows. Radishes have been up for 2 weeks, still no sign of parsnips. I'll be sowing again. It took me 3 or 4 times last year just to get some to germinate! Sow some more just in case Nes.

I'm kind of glad I'm not alone, but I am sorry that others have had seed/seedling drowning problems too. Maybe the sun will come out again one day . Just hoping this lot will work, as I've only got a few more seeds left, and not much of "spring" left either.

Zero germination from my 'snips. Resow later in the week. Along with the carrots that seem to have been mown down by the slug.

Mine popped up a while back and we've had shed loads of rain. They were self saved from year before lasts and had excellent germination. If they come out as parsnips and not some weird inedible hybrid due to cross pollination, I'm deffo doing it again. Carrots not doing so well though. Very poor showing on the plot and the ones I grow in half a dust bin at home have mysteriously, one by one, disappeared over the weeks. I suspect slugs. Bladdy things.

does anybody cover there snips for the first 15 days..this keeps them moist at All times.This is what i do i then water every day seems to work

I know some use the plank method. Never really needed to meself but I can imagine it helps a lot.

Don't think I've had a problem here with them being kept moist........

I station sowed my parsnips in March, and immediately covered with fleece, which I removed when seedlings were abount 2 cm high. I do sow quite a few seeds at each station, but always get a decent result. I think the constant moisture helps them germinate.

My carrots, which I sowed at the same time, germinated well under fleece, then were promptly eaten by slugs to the point that there was no evidence Id ever sown them. I planted a new batch this weekend.
