chicken poo - not pellets....

my neighbours have a couple of hens and they have kindly given me the sweepings from the roost each week - so its a mix of straw and chicken poo. So far I have been storing it in an old water trough with a lid on the plot as not sure what to do with it. Can I did it into the soil as it is or does it need mixing with water or is it a total waste of time me having it fom the neighbours....maybe I should ask for eggs instead ?

you can mix it with water for a feed, but let it stand for a bit, you can put it on the compost heap, you can feed with it but you should let it mature a bit, fresh stuff could burn your plants, it's really strong.

comfrey is the one who's making stuff like that anyway, it had deep roots that bring up nutirents, for you to chop the leaves off and use them elsewhere
although I suppose it wouldn't hurt. Rhubarb?

Chicken manure can have e-coli and salmonella, so I'd always compost it thoroughly before using it, never fresh

OK - compost heap it is - sounds like its too strong for the bottom of a bean trench which I was also considering!

As advised by other contributors, compost it well - never use chicken droppings fresh on the garden.

Use your lovely home made compost to grow super vegetables, then trade some with your neighbour for eggs !!

I get my next door neighbours strawy chicken poo also.They keep silkies so copious ammounts of straw helps to keep them clean as they have feathered legs.
It goes straight around my soft fruit bushes as a mulch, uncomposted.. I had wonderful soft fruit last year and no weeds to contend with either!.

My own chickens poo, which is less strawy is also just dumped in small heaps uncomposted and tickled in with a fork at planting time. I'm not saying this is the right thing to do but it certainly works for me.
I've even spread it neat around the brassica bed as a mulch before and even where its beeen touching brassica stems there's been no scorching.
