Chilli Tips.

I tried a few chilli peppers last year in my greenhouse but only to a mediocre degree of success.

Has anyone got any sure fire tips out there that they would be willing to share with a pepper novice?

warmth and light from the very start, water not too much, high potash feed for the fruits. Pick off the first flower(s) to appear and the plant will produce many more

When you say you didn't have much success - what do you mean?

I always pick the first flower off as it then throws loads of new flowers out and it really speeds the harvest up.

when planting them into their final position - put them in small pots (within moderation) i was told that from as local chilli grower and since ive done that ive got great results, also if you find that your chilis arn't hot it may be due to overwatering; i was told that you should water your chillis well, leave them for a few days, pick the ripe chillis and then water again, it worked!

By not much success I meant very little fruit.

Any mileage in a home made light box? I saw one on a site somewhere and it looks pretty straightforward.

Hi Frana, welcome back! I'm reasonably successful with chillies (touches wooden frame of mirror by my side). I only pot them on when absolutely necessary, i.e. can see the roots coming out of the bottom of the pot and I let them dry out completely before watering. Treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen seems to work for me.

Just goes to show how the old adage of what ever works for you is best
Oneof the main guys on a chilliforum i read sticks his seedlings straight into huge builders buckets and waters sparingly.
He had thousands of pods last year and does so every year

Most people will tell you to water sparingly

Didn't know about removing the first lot of flowers so thanks for that tip Does that also count for bell peppers? Assuming it would do but asking all the same.
