Looks like I could be having fresh asparagus for Christmas dinner Plants have decided they are not going to hibernate over winter and are throwing up big fat shoots . Do I ignore them and hope they come again in Spring or do I snaffle one or two ?

Mine's doing that too but I think the frosts we're forecast in the next few days will put paid to it. I've decided to leave mine rather than picking so as not to stress it anymore than it already is although have no idea if that's the right approach.

Probably a wise decision . I keep waiting for the old stuff to die off so i can chop it down but it doesn't seem to want to ..Next year will be the first year we can pick some so I hope it's not too confused.

What's the difference between picking it and letting it die with the frosts?

That would be on a pizza within minutes if it were mine; I'd be mixing that dough up before you could say 'mozzarella'.

Eat it and enjoy. As Zazen says, the frost will get them soon enough, so they won't produce any useful "ferns".

The plants are still a bit young , they were grown from seed 2009........

I read that when the ferns die off you cut them down and dump a load of manure or compost on them .....
