When you plant them out you need to keep the crown slighlt above the soil level, I sprinkle chicken poo pellets round each one and just tickle them in .......btw my leaves aren't as tall as that...

Funnily enough my celery is doing better than my celariac which is supposed to be harder to grow. Very strange. I did put some chicken poo in the hole when I planted but think I set them rather too deep, will try shallower next year. Most things I plant out like it deeper so I probably did the same and it's one of the few veggies I never grew as a child so I've no reference point - actually I hadn't heard of it until a couple of years ago and couldn't stand it the first couple of times I ate it until I discovered you have to cook it more than you would the likes of a carrot to get rid of that nasty taste it has at the start. Mind you, don't like raw celery either so there's probably a theme here.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I've never grown it before so wasn't sure what to do, but I read that they should be kept in pots until the root starts to swell and should be planted so the base of the stem should be at or slightly above soil level. I can't remember where I read it though - it might even have been on here.

The seeds went in 27 March, germinated from 13/04, were transplanted into individual pots 15 May. The biggest/best went into the ground 26/05, the smallest 14/06.

I planted every single one of the seedligns, which is probably far too many for us, some should have been thrown away but, well, you know how it is. The littlest ones are still little, about 18 inches tall and the roots only a couple of inches across, so they'll probably be 'all root' underneath.

About ten plants are doing really well, the top of the roots seem to be several inches across. They were put in a trench with old compost at the bottom, filled up with kitchen waste and covered with black fabric. French beans were put along the outer edges of the trench, the best celeriac seedlings went in the middle, between the rows of beans.

Celery - something I've kept buying, and kept consigning to the compost heap!

Compost heap noooo - best veg IMHO for soup. Celeriac and Stilton or Celery soup - heaven in a bowl!
