I only removed a couple of babies because they were shrivelling, so the plant would have eventually discarded them itself anyway.

The two biggest babies, are kiwi sized, and Ma keeps pointing out another set that look like conjoined twins. I have a question though. How can I be sure that fertilisation has actually taken place? With gladys there were babies, babies that turned yellow and withered away. Wasn't sure whether fertilisation had take place there either, to be honest.Comment

Evening everyone.
Some of Bruno's big dinner plate sized leaves have started to go a funny shade of yellow. Have read somewhere that is indicative of a feed-related deficiency. Have been trying not to over water as apparently over watering is what killed Gladys the BNS's babies.Comment

Bruno had lots of yellow leaves, that was strange.
Now, all the flowers have opened up. Lots of yellow ones, attached to both girl and boy bits. I've done the mad dash around, getting the boys and girls acquainted, have probably missed a few.
The two largest babies, that had flowers on a while ago. Do not look happy. One of them is Kiwi sized. I fear that Bruno is going to go the same way as Gladys the BNS. The fruits are withering away by the looks of things, so I may not be a happy hobbit shortly.Comment

Premature celebration...again?

Two are the about the size of an apple. The third is the size of a kiwi. However, I do believe that means nothing, and they all could all wither away and die.

Babies
At the moment, Bruno has three babies. Two, are kiwi shaped and apple sized. These don't appear at the moment to be getting bigger. The third appears to be swelling nicely and is the same size as a melon. I've elevated this one with some brick and it is sat on a granite tile. I'm still feeding once at least once a week, and there are lots more boy bits appearing too. (reckon that I could nip these off, elasticate the flower when it opens and then keep safe for gladys?)
Do I leave the two smaller one's alone?
Also, there's a powdery White residue on one of the big leaves. It disappears when rubbed.Comment

In my experience, newly pollinated pumpkins take a few days to really get going and then they take off, so it really depends on how long they've been pollinated. HTH

I'm just not very good at sitting on my hands, Reet. The one big one-the one in the pic that is on slate- does seem to be getting bigger. Bruno probably just needs some sun to help him a little bit. Had anticipated a nice slice of sun this weekend here in brum, but it's been pretty non-descript. There is still some time yet, I suppose. I'm no fan of the monte carlo or bust situation, one pumpkin would be nice. Next year, I will dabble with some jack be little and the hooligan F1 jobbies. It's not even my pumpkin! Ma made me do it....Comment

LOL, Hobbit sweetie, I check each of my pumpkins 2 or 3 times EACH DAY to see if they've grown
, so I know exactly how you feel.
We have 1 beachball sized one (belonging to middle Reetlet) a grapefruit sized one and a large lemon sized one (they're Biggest Reetlets') and a large orange sized one which lives next door to a small lemon sized one (and these belong to Littlest Reetlet). That's one per plant so I'm hopeful that they'll get nice and big.
This time last year we were in a simlar state regarding pumpkin numbers and sizes and all bar one of them became decent sized bright orange fruit, in time for Halloween. The one that didn't still grew to a good size AND turned orange but it had rather collapsed in on itself and was more flat than round

Keep feeding and watering and hope for the best.

P.S. This is a picture of ALL our home grown pumpkins last year. The largest one was turning orange at the time the other 3 were just being pollinated. 14th August was the date of the first photo of the second largest pumpkin (the palest of the four) and the third one as well. These first photos were labled '2 days after pollination' (I took a photo every couple of days to monitor growth and as a record of how fast these things can grow) which just goes to show that even pumpkins pollinated this late in the summer have a chance of reaching a decent size and ripening in time for Halloween . BTW I'm growing Hundredweight again.

Them's looks pretty! Positively, stupidly, jealous. I certainly will feed and water, Reet. 2-3 times a day seems to be about right, I do the same!
I do also get as running commentary from Ma about the latest developments, and she'll do what she tells me to do before I even get a chance to do it. Complains chronically about my pots, ticks me off for not eating the bollywood dishes that result from the garden and isn't convinced I could play with an allotment. But still wants two courgette plants next year, loves checking my chillies and gets very protective over Gladys the BNS.Comment

Well, I did. Ma then put it on the kitchen scales. It weighs approximately just over 5lbs, and will be going ripe on the window sill. I aint arguing with Pops...Comment
