Celeriac leaves?

When should we start pulling the leaves off celeriac to encourage bulb growth?

And can we eat them?

I wait till the bulb is fairly largish before pulling the outer leaves off to help them develop more (but I may be wrong of course - just what I do).

i've been pulling them off as they split on the bottom.

We've got lots of top growth, quite tall leaves and some of the outer leaves have died off, just the little ones, but none of them seem to have 'split'.

Should we perhaps be feeding them a bit more? They're in a trench that was filled with loads of kitchen waste, and they do get watered a lot.

Grew it for the first time last year and they never did get very big so if I waited until they did it'd not be worth it . None of the leaves have died or split either but I did pull a few off this morning so will have to see how it goes.

Same with me ... I grew it for the first time last year and did not truly understand what was required. As a result I had celeriac the size of a golf ball. It's down at the plot so I'll have a good look later on and try removing a few leaves too ... when you say split, I presume you mean at the base where it is connected to the 'bulb' (that's an optimistic term)?

that's the one...seems to be working on the ones in the tunnel but they're in tanks, so i can flood them with water and not worry about them drying out. The same ones in the garden are rubbish so far.
