  • Was my yield OK?

I have just lifted my first ever potatoes.

They are Annabelles and were planted in a B&Q orange bucket and a potato planter. The overall yield was around 5lbs. Is this OK?

If you are happy with it, then it's ok! How many tubers did you originally plant?
I think that as long as one gets a reasonable return on ones efforts, it's all worthwhile.
Enjoy your spuds, I'm sure they'll be lovely.

Planted 7 tubers overall. The pots do look tasty.

Seems ok to me? I planted 3 tubers per potato planter and got 1.1kg back from each. Cant remember which variety it was something basic like swift or rocket. I did let them go too long so they arent small new potatoes anymore but they do melt in the mouth exactly the same just bigger

From my experience yields from buckets and potato planters are smaller than potatoes planted out in the garden or allotment. If I get six potatoes from each tuber then I am happy. My best was a couple of years ago when I got 34 potatoes from one seed potato and weighed in at over 10lb.

              Saved myself 1.50

This is my first year though, so have had to buy bags and compost. In future years I wont need to so it will start to pay me back.

Anyway, improvement in taste alone could make it all worthwhile.

I dont think I will just empty in future. May just dig down and take what I need. Do you get a longer harvest that way?

lifted my first of the season - red DOY - yesterday and had 23 decent tatties so well pleased with that. had them with gammon and pineapple for my tea. I love it when the plot starts giving back in return for the effort .

I grew Accord this year this was the yield from a 20ltr container about the same size as a orange builders bucket.

B&Q Builder's Buckets are actually 12 litres. I rarely fill mine to the top so probably use more like 10 litres of compost per bucket.

I use two seed potatoes per bucket and get between 1kg and 1.2kgs of first or second early potatoes from each bucket.

I am very happy with this yield as they taste wonderful !!!
