Have you ever taken your babies on holiday?

I....kinda forgot we were going on holiday. Sowed a load of stuff in the heated props.

am I mad to be thinking that I'm going to take them on holiday with us? I don't feel I can trust anyone to take them out if they germinate!

I've germinated my squashes in unheated props or simply pots in the GH. I'd suggest you leave them but not in the props. How long are you away for?

A week - my greenhouse tops 40C when the sun is out, so can't really leave them in there (still haven't had time to setup the watering system).

My toms and stuff will be put in the bath on a wet towel.. I thought about leaving them (it's only two props full mind, so not much to take with me ) and doing the same but didn't want to risk them not germinating after being in a humid environment and then back to a normal one. Still, leaving on Friday - they were sown on Sunday I think, so may pop their heads up in time (if they do, they'll be in the bath).

Errr, yes . We went to OH's Mum & Dad's caravan one year. I had 2 very rare squash seeds I didn't want to trust anyone else with (if they'd have hurt my rare babies I'd have squished them like a bug ), so they came on holiday with us...

...I got them to germinate but I couldn't save seeds. My neighbour grew squash that year so I couldn't be sure they hadn't crossed .

They have already done a trip from Yorkshire to London!

heh, glad i'm not alone. I only took a couple of seeds from each packet of seeds I wanted to try from the parcel, 1 to grow, and a spare incase that o ne didn't germinate! So these are precious to me, yes I do like a good nibble on a roasted squash. yum

I'd pop them with the toms but in the sink, and leave them to it. I have to learn to do this when I leave my babies at various schools - esp during the hols when I know that they may or may not get watered....

What would be worse is if they all germinate and someone chucks a bag over them and snaps the heads all off. Can happen. Safer at home in the sink.

With water in it, or a wet towel? The kitchen is south facing, and does get warm in there, esp when the sun is out - I'm just concerned about them drying out. Maybe I'll leave 50% here, and take 50% with me

I think last year I filled the sink with water, put a towel in it, and along the draining board (ala capillary matting). Can't remember, what I do remember though is returning home to find that someone had watered them "quite" well (i.e. pretty much drowned them).

The best thing to do is get your family into skiing or snowboarding. I find January is a great time for an allotmenteerist to take a holiday.
