Do you think you could use Mescanthus instead of bark chippings around shrubs etc? Seems to cost a fortune in bark.

I don't see why not, Dave. I did a bit of a "belt and braces" job on my paths by first putting down overlapping newspapers followed by weed suppressing membrane, then topping off with Mescanthus. As you can probably tell I REALLY don't want weeds on my paths! I would suggest you damp it down a bit (once you've put it down) as it is lighter than bark, but once it's settled it's quite firm.
One word of warning though, I mentioned it on here when I first "discovered" it and someone told me that it is also a bio-fuel and therefore quite flamable - so watch out for sparks from BBQ's/bonfires etc!
