Today was the day I admitted defeat in the greenhouse . I'd planted some potatoes intended for Christmas, and they grew brilliantly, but a few weeks ago they started being dug up and eaten by rats. Then the dogs started trying to dig out the rats, and I had to dig up all the potatoes (not that there were many left). I thought that would be the end of it, as with the potatoes gone there was nothing for the rats to eat. We'd also put down poison in rat boxes in the hope of getting rid, and blocked off the door to keep out the dogs.

The digging continued. I had 3 grow beds, one with potatoes, one with parsley along the front and some mizuna plants waiting to go behind following tomatoes, and the 3rd with newly planted carrots and calabrese. After the potatoes were removed all 3 beds were dug up. One of the 2 calabrese plants was killed, and almost all the carrots were dug up. I put some wire mesh over the carrots and calabrese, but the digging didn't stop.

Yesterday when I went to look, half the contents of the potato bag were on the floor, there was a large tunnel behind the parsley (which is huge and far too big to dig up) and the carrots were gone. I went to the local garden centre to ask advice, as they are also based on a farm. Having explained the setup the man said that what was likely was that there was a nest of rats in the soil underneath the greenhouse and that I woud not get rid of them easily.

Today, having inspected the place more closely, I'm sure he is right. There are holes in the soil both inside and outside the greenhouse, so no amount of shutting doors etc will keep the beggars out. I decided the only thing to do was to remove eveything from the greenhouse, dig out a couple of inches of soil, and put down some hardcore or tarmac chippings so the rats find it harder to get in.

I dug up the surviving calabrese plant and put it into a big pot, on a shelf where hopefully it will be safer. Not sure what to do with the parsley.

Oh dear that sounds awful. A good way of persuading rats to leave is to put a hose in one of the holes and turn the water on - flood them out.

Busy busy for me today Finished digging compost into the last of my veggie beds, turned one full compost bag adding a little horse manure to it, this bag is now closed up. Emptied and sieved another part-bag into another bag ready for using later. I am so pleased with my compost this year - black and crumbly and smells nice. I hope my plants appreciate it.

Busy busy for me today Finished digging compost into the last of my veggie beds, turned one full compost bag adding a little horse manure to it, this bag is now closed up. Emptied and sieved another part-bag into another bag ready for using later. I am so pleased with my compost this year - black and crumbly and smells nice. I hope my plants appreciate it.

And also my English Setter Rosie dispatched a mouse that was living in the compost - I am sure this is the mouse that ate half of the first sown row of peas -GRRRRR!

It was a gorgeous day here today and I managed to spend some time sorting out the compost heap.

I spread three barrowloads onto this bed, I'm planning to fill it up with overwintering onion sets tomorrow:

Spent the day delivering consultancy at the UK's largest onion farm. Got a handful of pelleted onion seeds that they use. Apparently sets are no good for supermarket onions.

Erected another greenhouse today. I'm now making some carrot masking tape.

got the kids to earn their tea - and collected ten bin bags of leaves now watered and down the side of the shed

Another lovely day today. I cleared another bed on my veg plot, got three barrowloads of compost on it and planted overwintering onion sets on this and another bed; 150 sets total.

I gathered these rather woody beetroot and rather manky carrots. Any suggestions as to what to do with them?

Yesterday I went to the allotment (first time for about seven weeks) and surveyed the jungle. Then I took down all the canes for the runner and French beans and pruned the summer fruiting raspberries. Went back this afternoon and before the heavens opened managed to prepare the bed for the garlic and get it planted. I feel like I have got my mojo back a little - it has been hard to motivate myself since Mr Q died, but today was good. Hoping for decent weather on Friday afternoon or Saturday or indeed both!

Composted all the tomato plants,peppers and courgettes today sad to see them go but now i can start thinking about next season .

Took out my GH cucs that's now finished then raked up leaves trugs full of them.

Picked some more French beans from the garden!

2 nd sowing, and under fleece...but by heck it's November in 2 days!

And yes, they were yummy !
