What I did today 2012-2014

Not so much today, but what was prepared for today!

My "Gardening Buddy" decided he wanted his back yard "Resined" but obviously needed "Edging out"

Angled edges "Alway's a ball ache!"

But think the desired effect achieved!

Not a lot today. Did a bit of hand weeding,finished digging a bed,fastened up some plastic around my carrot bed,harevested some spring cabbage plants, more to give me some more room to plant leeks than the need to eat spring cabbage.More rhubarb harvested also. Watered seedlings in greenhouse,french beans are just starting to germinate.

Finished my raised bed with reinforcement that was needed and laid down the weed suppressor.

Quarter filled with some rock I had spare and transferred one of the 1T bags of top soil I had.

Now I'm shattered. 1 more bag to go and its ready. Need to mix some compost in with the final amount. ....that's tomorrow's job tho if home from work early enough!

Made it down the lottie after being away for a bit- intending to cut the grass, but it started chucking it down as soon as I got there, so I just hid in the shed, sneaking out for a bit of weeding during the gaps.

Disturbed a couple of field mice buidling a nest under the cardboard on the brassica-bed-to-be. That would explain why only 3 of the 20 odd peas sowed a few beds over germinated then

Moved the DIY cover on to the currant bushes- I think their need is greater than the kale and 9-star broccoli. Also made a start on digging a new patch out on the chaos half of the plot; maybe where I can grow some of the silly number of currant and gooseberry cuttings I keep taking. Didn't get much done before I had to leave, but if I've made a start, I'll get on with it.

Planted out 10 Swift sweetcorn seedlings into their bed, also put two Jack be little pumpkin plants in between them. Planted more summer and autumn carrots, then more spring onion. Potted up 34 pea seeds, hope they germinate while we are on holiday. Apart from last minute waterings, all my babies are on their own now 😞 it's Vegas time!

Watered the front garden, and put some comfrey tea on. First few broad bean plants showing, and one snow pea.
The bok choi are nearly ready so will be needing to do a lot of stir fries shortly.

Back garden to do tomorrow, and water the insane amount of rainbow chard that has self sprouted in the side beds. And make some manure tea for later on.

I'm envious of you putting your pumpkin plants out Sally - it's just not warm enough here overnight yet and they're now in pots almost too big and heavy for me to lift, so potting on again isn't an option. Looking at the forecast it's going to be June before squashes and tomatoes can go out. I'm wondering if I should just risk it, as too much more time spent in a pot isn't going to do the plants any good. It's been so wet I feel I've hardly done a thing in the veg patch lately.

Anyway, this morning I potted up some lavender and poppy seedlings for a friend whose new puppy demolished her bedding plants I cut various herbs for her too. I also potted on two more aubergine seedlings (I now have four healthy young plants and wildly unrealistic expectations) and potted on a large parsley plant which is going to my aunt as a present this weekend.

Don't be jealous, they were planted by necessity, not choice lol They could all be dead or at the very least checked by the time we come back. The only consolation (and it's not) is that I can always start again. Anyway, fingers crossed

I have half a bed planted up with module sown swede plants and netted. This evening I hoe'd the other half of the bed and sowed the rest of the packet of swedes direct. Extended the netting to cover this area as well.
Hand weeded my shallots which are forming nicely now. Hand weeded my strawberries which aren't growing too well..........yet.

Hand weeded and hoed a small bed of onions.

6 hrs at the Allotment is what I did today

Lots and lots of weeding . . . lots of Horsetail, I finally have a way of getting it out when it is in close proximity to cultivated plants now my fingers feel like they have been sanded with sandpaper

Planted out 40 White Spanish Onions grown from seed, planted out some mixed Lettuce + slug pellets sowed another meter of Carrots - Flyaway F1, sowed a few Beetroot - Boltardy as the last few in the row were "missing". Sowed a few White Lisbon "spring onions" to fill a gap in the row.

I took our learning disabled foster lad fishing this afternoon, quite the nicest day of this year so far, blue sea blue sky and he caught a whopping mackerel. I blanked and caught zilch which is a good thing because if I catch more than him he is unliveable with for a week.

Today I dug up some 1st earlies and very tasty they were. They are Swift planted on 3/3/14, they were a really good size too.
Earthed up the smallest toms and sowed a few more peas.

Planted out yet more lettuce. Also planted out more cabbages as the pigeons ate the last lot. Planted out another courgette or it might have been a butternut, the label had fallen off.

Then I pottered around a bit just enjoying the sunshine. Walked the 30 seconds to my dad's allotment to water his courgettes and found his shed had been broken in to. 😖

Once home I potted on a couple of chilli's and put some parsley seed in water to soak, I'll sow it tomorrow and hopefully I'll have better luck with it.
