What I did today 2012-2014

took the profile sheeting orf the shed at my old plot and fitted it to the roof of the shed on my new plot over the new plywood roof I fitted at the end of last week. Pretty happy with myself all in all. Also fitted another 4 of the anchor plates for my polytunnel so that is going fairly well as well, only another 5 to do

Y/day moved a compost bin and its contents from a pals house to the allotment. I'm giving the compost bin away to anyone who wants it but the bagged up compost is for an experiment I'm doing on my YouTube allotment journal channel.

After a very chilly -1'c night, today has turned into a lovely and mild, bright, beautiful day.

Spent three hours on the lottie. Finished pulling the grass that was threatening the strawberry plants the previous plot holder had put in. Severed the runner plants and moved them a bit, they'd end up growing over each other otherwise. Weeded around the bed of the strawberries.

Marked out where I want my beds to be on the northern part of the plot. I'm going to sacrifice a bit of space to slightly wider paths. With my bad back, I need to be able to get in about the plants without having to crouch in awkward positions and all that but I'm still left with nice big beds.

Was accompanied by Buzzards today. It was an absolute joy

Counted my spinach seedlings - I now have 74 and more are appearing every day. Think I may have gone a bit overboard with sowing! Also pricked out my rainbow swiss chard seedlings and put them into individual 3" pots. Then planted out the two Durham cabbages I sowed last August into one of my raised beds to make room in the greenhouse.

Sadly, still no sight of the broad beans I sowed nearly a month ago, nor of the carrots, beetroot, peas or climbing beans. But six little kohl rabi seedlings have bravely appeared in their raised bed, which made me very happy. :-)

Weather was superb today, really enjoyed being out in it, could have just sat at the allotment and been happy.

Didn't manage to get the part I hope I need (Power MOSFET 75NF75) for my cordless drill but have ordered it and will get it tomorrow. I dug out my old cordless drill, it's a Bosch but only has a small battery so is a bit gutless, to be fair it did it's best today and helped me secure yesterdays edging timber and put down another 2.4m length. Just 2 more 2.4m lengths to go . . .




Added another 2 bags of Horticultural Grit to the bed where the herbs will be going and did a bit more weeding and hoeing.

Turned my compost bins then spent the afternoon sowing seeds in the GH. Mr Pots gave the grass its first cut of the season.

- started hardening off the GH ophiopogons, to be planted in the front garden instead of lawn
- found 100s more onion/shallot sets, had to plant them all over plot because onion bed full already
- covered the weedy raspberry bed with wet newspapers: much quicker & easier than hoeing or pulling
- took out the yellow daffs from home, planted at lotty
- cut the green manures again (clover, phacelia, mustard) and left cuttings on the soil as a mulch
- made a mozzie trap to hang over the water butts: getting bitten already
- pulled most of the leeks out (they'll be flowering soon): cleaned, sliced & put in freezer
- left a dozen leeks to go to seed

Finally finished assembling the polytunnel, after a couple of mishaps got it secured and ready to start my planting in the morning, would have started tonight but too dark now.

Went to Lottie at 9 potted about dug a bed did a bit more greenhouse assembling went to work at 12 finished at 4 back to the allotment to do more greenhouse but got way laid by the chicken man then left at 7 it was just getting dark � I love the allotment !!

Done now't gardening wise! Apart from filling a few 3" pots of sieved compost, n brought indoors to warm through for the last bits I need to pot on! OH! Has underlying health issues! Been for an Opp! But back home safe n sound! Can now "Breath in"

Spent the morning filling my car with horse manure Lovely old well rotted stuff. The horse fields back onto the garden but I have to go the long way round to reach the manure heap. Please don't suggest I take a wheelbarrow instead of the car - its an uphill push all the way home!
This afternoon I transplanted some clumps of puny leeks straight into manure. They never did reach pencil thickness...............this is their last chance to do something useful.
Pegged down several overtall kales and spring cabbages in the hope that I can get them to root along the stalk and produce sideshoots. I've been doing this with a couple of cabbages in the GH that I've kept going for 3 years. The sideshoots are taken as cuttings and grown on to mature cabbages.
You know me....................I never garden by the book
