What I did today 2012-2014

Picked my last cauli!
Planted out autumn-sown sweet peas... netting on one side, glass and plastic on the other to keep the birds off. Also direct sowed some lettuce under netting and some early carrots under fleece. Feels like spring!

Lifted the netting on my veggiemesh cage on the patio and swept out all the bits that had got in there. Added the carrots that were sown in the garage and are now germinating, and another pot of newly sown carrots. Put the netting back. I'm thinking of getting one of these zips Zip Net Access Strip - Garden Supplies at Harrod Horticultural to make harvesting easier as the net is carefully weighted down with bricks making access tricky.

Planted out the early onward peas (not many) in the cold frame and rigged up a support and fleece cover.

Sowed some spring onions, parsley and spinach in the garage and some garlic chives indoors.

Sowed Mizuna, Chard, and Spinach Beet. Sowed some poppy seeds, they are the tiniest seeds I have ever seen.

Husband completed the last 2 beds for me, so just gave to sort them out re filling.

Sorted out sweet peas, (removed fleece) cos v warm here so not needed.

Looked at the onion sets, and decided to leave them for another day.

Was just beautiful warm sunny day here.

Good day for me today

Got up with the kids to allow my wife a lay in first time since my op gave them breakfast washed up and woke her up with a cup of coffee at 11

She went out so I got sowing some chard and some herbs

There all out at a party now so going to sort through my seed box and maybe sow a few more bits

Potted all my chilli seedlings now, except 1 scotch bonnet which is still in the propagator with some bell pepper seedlings. I have 5 Cayennes potted, 3 Scotch Bonnets and 2 Jalepenos. Hope tomorrow is a clear sunny day

Spent a very enjoyable, and warm, few hours at the allotment this afternoon, was nice to feel a warm wind rather than a "fresh" one

Did some weeding but mainly worked on my main path, it's coming along, albeit slowly, everything takes longer now that I have fewer places to put piles of stones and earth . . . it's a bit like playing musical stone piles

I'm using my stones as a base for the path and putting wood chippings on top to make it comfortable under foot . . .





. . . would like to think I'll get it finished tomorrow, but the Rugby is on at 3pm

The ground is still too wet to do much on the veggie patch and I'm up to date with everything in the polly. Busied myself tidying up whilst keeping an eye on the two new hens I introduced to the flock yesterday, few minor scraps but nothing serious so should be ok. Strong, cold wind today didn't help.

Easy day today

Purchasing: Went out and boughts some growing trays with 3" pots for strawberry runners till my other strawberries (seedlings) get established.
Installation: Sited a couple of traditional lamppost style solar lights (about 1.2m tall), and a couple of the gas lights.
Testing: Sat outside with a drink and cigarette, surveying the work done so far to see if it "feels" right

Made a start on the base for our second hand greenhouse today. We got it off ebay 18 months ago and it has been sitting at the bottom of the allotment ever since! Warned the OH if he doesn't help me put it up by the end of March I will be asking for a new one for my next birthday! That did the trick, today he started untangling the bits of frame from the couch grass that had grown all over it, and after much scratching of head he announced he thinks he knows how it goes together! Yippee! Unfortunately the frame is broken in 3 places, but OH reckons he can fix it. Also countless panes of glass got broken during the move, but my allotment neighbour says he has lots of spares we can have.
The base is now level (ish) and ready for the erection of the greenhouse tomorrow. I am sarting to get cautiously hopeful! This could be the year of the greenhouse!!

Spent the first couple of hours jumping on my log splitter, then had a bonfire day till around 7pm.

Had a fantastic day at the allotment today. My first day at the allotment.

Kicked off this morning with a visit from our local RHS co-ordinator, doing a quick seed sowing demo, a walk around the lotty giving advice and opinion and handing out oodles of freebies.

Got to meet most of the folk who currently have plots, including two other newbies who only chose their plots this morning.

Spoke to co-ordinator about my plans for some sqft gardening beds at the bottom of the plot and all of the taller veges (beans, peas, that sort of thing) and root or bigger veges at the top of the plot. We took a walk around and she agreed that would be a great option for using the space, keeping things simple and laid out clearly and good for experimenting too. So I'm thankful for everyone's advice on the sqft gardening methods etc, I'm glad I looked into it

Having a bit of a poke about on my plots, I found several signs of life which I did not expect!
Under a rather ratty piece of mostly broken netting at the bottom, we discovered ten very healthy looking strawberry plants with new growth and two unloved Kale plants. This area has a lot of grass growing between the strawbs so will need to hand pull them and inspect the strawbs properly. I'll have to get some more netting too to keep them covered. I'll pull the Kale and dedicate the whole bed to strawberries, may as well, we wanted to plant strawbs anyhow, so there is a free bed of them right there for us, woop!

Took photos of the plots to better help me plan what I'll need to do and found an old organiser diary thing, so I can set out some plans, look at seed dates and the like, later on tonight with a wee cheeky glass of something

Quite productive for a damp and windy day.

Sunny day today, planted some onions and shallot sets in modules - I know some people say you shouldn't but I did it last year and had a bumper harvest ☺️ Also planted some spring onions, Brussels sprouts, radishes and salad leaves in my new bargain salad bag planter! Hopefully some fresh leaves in a few weeks 🌿🍁🌿 Going to be hotter than Ibiza here tomorrow apparently, spring has sprung!

Arrived at lottie to find my neighbours plot in disarray , toolbox empty and wheelbarrow missing, phone call to break bad news revealed he has given up plot! He told me to take what I wanted so I emptied all thee compost heaps onto my raised beds and took 2 builders bags of manure along with a 50 m roll of 2m wide mypex. Weeded out strawberries and elephant garlic , repaired bean frame and emptied out my compost bins. Made a cup of tea and sat watching robin picking over compost he even sat on my shoulder several times while I was weeding darting down to pick up bugs. Rescrewed corners of raised beds that had sprung over winter.covered 5 beds with hoops and clear plastic to warm soil then came home for restorative beer and bath. A good day but mixed feelings about loss of a good neighbour, anyone in harrow need a plot?
