What I did today 2012-2014

Planted out okra - as it survived being forgotten about last night and it was 1 degree (fleeced most else) thought it may as well go out.
planted out pitiful few white cannellini and flageolet beans - terrible germination this year, about ten percent.
Cut path edges to feed the slugs as it is wet and warmish.
Mulched bed for next batch of haricot beans - it is a newer bed so still very yucky heavy clay.

Got to the allotment for 7.30 this morning and spent the day rotavating the whole plot, laying wood chip paths and mulched half my plot with grass clippings. The grass had lots of blossom in and had the most amazing smell. Finally left the plot at 6.30. I am so going to sleep like a baby tonight :-)

my cuca melon seeds were very poor only got 2 small seedlings have to see if they make it !

Went to a plant sale this morning but it was mostly flowers. The only vegetable plants were tomatoes and although they were dead cheap (40p each) they didn't look as healthy as mine. So I didn't buy anything and went up to the market instead. Bought 2 strips of cauliflowers (approx 16 plants), a strip of parsley plants and a large oregano plant - all for �3.00!

Sowed spring onions (crimson something or other and white lisbon) and land cress in the raised beds outside.

Sowed thyme and mint in little pots in the greenhouse.

Sowed more runner beans in greenhouse but then took them down to the polytunnel on the allotment along with the runners and French beans already up and a sweet dumpling plant that's already quite large.

Potted on some cucumbers and sweet dumpling squash.

Managed to make room in the greenhouse ready for rescued tomato plants coming home tomorrow. But I have run out of compost and I know they will need potting on asap.

More digging and weeding at the allotment.

Peas, spuds, broad beans, lettuce and onions all looking good. I have baby gooseberries and blackcurrants, the rhubarb is going mad, and the loganberry and raspberries are showing flower buds.

Two Big Max pumpkin plants are now at the mercy of the elements and the snugs. They were very, very healthy when they went in this afternoon. We'll see what tomorrow brings!

Nothing, it was too d@mn cold this morning and now the bitter wind off the snow is here.
Might need to go put the pump on for water today tho, or there'll be no royal flush in the bathroom!

Planted out one of my raised beds. I have decided to try square foot gardening to give us variety as we only have 4 x square meter beds. So planted out:
- 1 x brussell sprouts
- 1 x calabrese
- 2 squares of 9 leeks
- 2 squares of 16 Nantes carrots
- 1 square of beetroot
- 1 square of onions

that leaves 1 square to do which is the parsnips but these are still growing in the greenhouse as I had started they by chitting then have planted the chits into loo rolls. Giving them a wee bit longer before sending them outside. Everything else apart from the carrots were started off in the greenhouse. I have hoops over the bed so have covered with fleece as we are still due to have some colder nights - Metcheck is saying -2 next Thursday - eh it will be June soon!!!!

Plan for today is to:
- sow some more peas for pea shoots
- sow lettuce, spring onions, rocket and radish outside in my long planter
- sow mixed leaves in greenhouse
- earth up greenhouse spuds
- sow some more chitted parsnips into loo rolls.
- make square foot frame for 3rd bed.

I agree Feral. I do wonder about these parents that seem to have their children's lives mapped out for them. I wonder if Alan Titchmarsh or Monty Don's, or Carol Klein's (but to name a few) parents ever said, learning about plants won't help them in their future?!

Yesterday - a little too chilly and changeable to go to the plot, although OH and I made a flying visit to effect emergency repairs to the shed roof. Some heavy duty plastic tacked in place until we can re-felt it all properly. Then weeded the onions in the raised bed at home, potted on tomatoes and cucumbers, planted out some Iceberg and Little Gem lettuces, planted out sweet peas and pottered about generally.

- spent a day at Woodgate being one of 3 Master Gardeners, chatted to about 80 local people, giving advice & tips on making compost, growing crops. There's a lot of confusion about composting, what can & can't go in, and how long the end product takes to appear, and there's a general expectation that it should look like the potting compost you buy in bags (which it doesn't).

- went lotty with my new toy & tidied up the path
- planted out more peas & beans
- weeded

Went to the allotment and weeded all the rows (ouch my back) gave everything a feed with maxicrop then Barrowed some compost onto an area ready for my brassicas to go in

Replaced those cucumbers which didn't survive last week's wind / frost despite fleece with some hardened-off reserves. Some cucs and all the courgettes did make it, though, and as the forecast now looks set fair I think we are in business. Emboldened, I also planted out some rouge vif pumpkins and and a couple of winter squashes. The remainder should go in by the end of the week.

Planted out the rest of the runner beans and a second wigwam of cosse violette and cobra climbing beans. Also half the sweetcorn and some sungold, black russian, sungella and marmande tomato which the wife has deemed surplus to requirements for her greenhouse. Sowed more french beans destined for the third wigwam in trays.

Planted out green dwarf kale and brussels sprouts. Last year's sprouts produced nothing edible despite growing into impressive looking plants so I'm hoping for a great improvement this time.

Thinned celeriac seedlings - never grown them before, and I'm still finding it hard to believe these puny little plants germinated from microscopic seed can ever produce things approaching the size of knobbly footballs. We shall see.

And that's my plot pretty well filled for the moment

Three hours at the allotment this morning - planted out my cauliflowers and courgettes, planted out some Little Gem lettuce in the coldframe, planted runner bean, climbing french bean and dwarf french bean seeds. Finished the bed edging on the big bed and did lots of weeding. Planted some cornflower seeds, molded up the early potatoes. Glorious morning and there were only 3 other allotmenteers there. No accounting for it is there! Picked loads of rhubarb for first jam of the season .... raspberry and rhubarb (found 1 pound of last season's raspberries lurking in the freezer).
