What I did today 2012-2014

Planted out some kale, rainbow chard, celery and about 150 leeks Most of the leeks will be eaten as babies and I've planted them a lot closer together for this reason, will leave about 1/4 to grow into biggies (hopefully)

Emptied a bin of potatoes, pathetic amount, sowed some mustard as a green manure. Have left the other bin to have a look in at a later date.

Planted out 20 brussel sprout plants I found in a pot that I had forgot about.

The only area I had available was a bed I covered with cardboard then strawy maure about a month ago. Its certainly worked as a weed suppressant so I just used my dibber to mark the positions I wanted to plant sprouts and planted them through the straw into dibbered holes.
Rigged up a makeshift net over them to keep the flying rats off and Bobs your uncle.

It will be an interesting experiment considering I planted them at half the recommended distances.

Planted out 28 French bean (Cobra), weeded for 3 hours (weeding complete for now), destroyed 3 wasps nests and discovered a bees nest under our porch roof, since then spent the day with a drink watching them at work.

Potted on some Rhubarb Chard then tied my Serbian beans to their canes, hopefully that will encourage them to climb because they seem a bit slow of the mark compared to my scarlet emperor runners.

Oh Bren The beans, the beans, I've forgotten them again, even though they are so memorable - I will sow them this weekend do you think they'll be ok in a container?

I've done nothing this evening except to watch the veg grow

Allotment this afternoon. Was cool and grey when I went and boiling when the sun came out.

Rigged up a makeshift roof for my poor shed.

More weeding and digging. Starting to look quite good now.

Little helper and I picked and ate a few strawberries and picked mixed lettuce leaves for lunch tomorrow.

Had a very quick trip to the allotment this evening. Weeded for about 30 mins and managed to mostly finish the second path. Still needs some grass pulling and then weed matting put over the top.

Pulled most of the weeds out of the onion bed but still about 2 ft square to sort.

Left the polytunnel open. Most things in there look pretty healthy.

Spotted some cardiod leaves in the front garden raised border the other day. Looked again this evening. Oh my, stems everywhere! Probably bindweed Calystegia sepium as it's certainly binding to the peonies and whatever else is in there. Unravelled the stems, laid them out over the side of the raised bed walls and sprayed with glyso Those not long enough popped in a plastic bag and sprayed.
Nice therapeutic job once started.

Too tired to post last night after staking lazy broad beans to encourage them to grow upright and tying in some poorly, clueless runner beans to their canes. While I was doing that, OH dug another 2 full width rows in our ongoing attempt to reclaim the land! I then close weeded that part while he hoed between the potatoes and did some earthing up. Finally we picked 26 edible strawberries.

- moved potatoes from greenhouse (in bags) and put them with others. All fed and watered.
- fed and watered courgettes, tomatoes, garlic, peppers and chillies.
- watered all the other veg.
- weeded the square foot beds.
- harvested some radishes for hubbie.

Planted out 4 Butternut Squash, 8 PSB, destroyed 100's of caterpillars from the gooseberry bushes, sat and got sunburnt with a cup of tea and newspaper!

Quick trip to lottie. Watered polytunnel stuff. Strung the runner and climbing beans. Put up a couple of trellises to try to support the evergrowing purple podded peas. Man they are tall! Spotted first courgette growing. Harvested half a dozen pea pods, loads of salad leaves and some huge purple radishes - the size of golf balls!

Hacked at the weeds on next door's plot that are overgrowing my side path. Had to leave then as I had a sewing class tonight.
